자기 표현적 글쓰기는 학생들의 쓰기 흥미와 동기를 진작시킬 수 있다는 측면에서 작문 교육에서 주목을 받아 왔다. 자기 표현적 글쓰기는 쓰기 목적에 따라 치료, 성찰, 전달의 세 가지 축을 중심으로 이루어져왔는데, 저널 쓰기, 자서전, 자기소개서 등이 이와 관련된 대표적 양식에 해당한다. 중등학교 작문 교육에서는 자기 표현적 글쓰기와 관련하여 자서전과 자기소개서가 중요하게 다루어지고 있다. 중등 작문 교육에서 이들 양식이 어떻게 수용되고 있는지를 교과서 분석을 통해 살펴본 결과, 교육의 초점이 사회적 성취를 중심으로 한 자기 점검에 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 이는 자기 발견이라는 청소년기의 중요한 발달 과업을 고려할 때 개선이 필요한 부분에 해당한다. 청소년기에는 내면을 탐구하여 자기를 발견하는 것이 중요한 과제에 해당하는데 자기 표현적 글쓰기는 이를 효과적으로 달성하는 수단이 된다. 이를 고려하면 중등학교의 자기 표현적 글쓰기 교육은 학생들의 자기 탐구 강화, 양식의 본질에 부합하는 쓰기 수행, 타자와의 소통이 강조되어야 한다. 중등학교의 자기 표현적 글쓰기교육이 이러한 방향으로 진행될 때 글쓰기를 통한 인성 교육 또한 가능해질 것이다.

Expressive writing has attracted attention in writing education in the way that it could increase the interest and the motivation of students. Expressive writing can be classified into 3 types, which are therapy, reflection, and communication. Expressive writing has great possibilities in secondary school writing education. Secondary school writing education deals with autobiography and self-introduction mainly. The education of this genre is focused on social achievements. It is not proper that students should write autobiography and self-introduction for social achievements. On the contrary it is necessary for student to reflect his life in expressive writing education. Expressive writing is good means to inquire the inner world and to discover the self in adolescence. Expressive writing should be planned to intensify self-inquiry and self-discovery in secondary writing education. Considered this direction, expressive writing can be contributed to character education.
