Sijo began to be enjoyed by the gentry class(sadaebu) whose ideological foundation was Neo-Confucianism. The intellectuals in the Choseon Dynasty era developed their academic knowledge by studying Confucian scriptures. Therefore, various cultural facts of China acquainted during the study meant ‘knowledge as liberal arts’. This was the case in the sijo genre as well; various ways of cognition of China and its civilization were reflected in sijo works. However, two rounds of Manchu invasions in the early 17th century changed it because the surrender of their king to the “barbarian intruders” was a cultural shock to the people of Choseon. Some sijo works created after the middle of the 17th century were based on the Manchu War, in which critical consciousness about Qing is revealed. In this study, the cognition on Qing Dynasty reflected in sijo works written by gentry(sadaebu) writers was investigated. The main aspect of the cognition on China found in sijo works was the idealization of Confucian ideology. Some works contained positive or negative recognitions against historical figures of China. In particular, a historical figure often received conflicting judgements depending on the standpoint of the writer, which is related to the figurationpursuant to the writer`s consciousness. However, the cognition on Qing Dynasty that conquered China in the early 17th century was totally different. All the sijo works telling the Manchu War expressed sentiment of grief or shared the sad memory, based on the experience of defeat in the Manchu War. Therefore, regret for the hostages was remarkable and the loyalty to the king and specific figures wasemphasized. In this article, the sijo works based on the Manchu War, which were released intensively in the late 17th century, are assessed to examine the aspects and meaning of the figuration.
