이 연구에서는 고등학교 2학년 남녀학생 두 학급을 대상으로 전광용의 ‘꺼삐딴 리’를 읽고 토론을 실시한 후 독서토론이 학생들의 작품 이해에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 분석하였다. 이 연구에서 탐구하고자 한 질문은 토론 전과 후에 주인공 ‘이인국’에 대한 학생들의 평가 반응 이 어떻게 달라졌는가? 학생들의 생각이 달라졌다면 그 요인은 무엇 인가? 하는 것이었다. 연구 결과 토론 전 주인공 ‘이인국’에 대한 평가 반응은 부정 평가 가 압도적이었으나 토론 후에는 긍정 평가와 부정 평가가 비슷하게 나타났다. 입장을 바꾸진 않았지만 주인공에 대한 인식이 바뀐 학생들 도 적지 않았다. 주인공에 대한 생각이 달라진 이유는 토론 과정에서 상대측의 설득과 논증 때문이었다. 학생들은 토론을 통해서 인물에 대 해서 생각해 보지 않았던 점을 더 깊이 생각하게 되었고 자기와 다른 상대편의 의견도 옳다는 것을 깨닫게 되었다. 학생들의 90.4%가 독서 토론을 통해서 작품에 대한 이해도가 높아졌다고 응답한 것으로 보아 독서토론이 고등학생들의 작품에 대한 이해도를 높이는 데 기여했다 고 추론할 수 있다.

This study examined the effects of classroom debate on 11th graders’ literature comprehension. 63 male and female students read a novel titled Captian Lee written by Gwangyong Geon, and joined the debate. The question focused on the study was whether the students’ ideas and evaluation on the main character would be changed or not by the debate. This study found out that the students’s evaluation was dominantly negative before the debate. However, the evaluation became half negative and half positive after the debate. In addition, there were some students who kept their negative evaluation; but changed and deepen their understandings on the behaviors of main character. The reason that students changed their evaluation was the persuasion and argument provided by the opposite stances. Most students became to think over various aspects of the main character and to accept some effective argument offered by the opposite stances throughout the debate. In the survey, finally, 90.4% of students who participated in the debate reported their understandings of this novel were improved. This result of the study identified the effect of the literature debate on richness and depth of the students’ literary understandings.
