This essay focuses on the changes of genres in Shakespeare``s The Winter``s Tale. It begins in a tragic atmosphere and is suddenly changed to comedy or pastoral romance. Therefore, it is called tragicomedy or romance play. This essay regards Leontes`` jealousy as the reason that the play has a variety of genres. The arousal of jealousy, which is so sudden and seems such a mystery. An inexplicable and seemingly unmotivated storm of jealousy immediately destroys the atmosphere of trust and the friendship in Leontes`` court. Moreover, because of his jealous imaginations, Leontes comes to believe that his friend and his wife have had illicit relations. The fearful Jealousy of Leontes causes him to be a tyrant and to be immersed in the tragic and suspicious world, resulting in being separated from his family- Hermione dies and the baby daughter, Perdita abandoned at his commend is lost. Immediately, Sicily is full of guilt and repentance. However, throughout the turning point, Act 3 Scene 3, the play is changed to pastoral romance. Shakespeare prepares the healing of the Sicilian wounds with the aid of nature. On the Bohemian coast, innocence and the spirit of comedy give the characters power overcoming the tragic darkness of both the sicilian and the Bohemian courts. Finally, in Act 5, the miracle which is one of the most critical theme in romance plays takes place. Leontes`` meeting with Hermione and Perdita provides him with a mixture of pleasure and remorse. It is interesting and remarkable that jealousy enables the play to wear various clothes.
