본 논문은 마누엘 사파타 올리베야(Manuel Zapata Olivella, 1920-2004)의 소설 『샹고, 위대한 난봉꾼(Chango, el gran putas)』(1983)에 대한 분석을 통해, 카리브 흑인들의 고통의 역사와 그 혼종 문화적 특징을 살펴본 글이다. 본 논문은 서론과 결론을 합쳐 총 6장으로 구성되어있으며, 각 장은 작품의 신화·역사·문학·문화적 성격을 분석한 내용으로 구분되어 있다. 이를 좀 더 자세하게 살펴보면, 먼저 2장에서는 아프리카 신화와 노예무역선에서 이루어진 흑인들의 저항을 다루고 있는데, 이는 흑인들이 카리브 해로 끌려오게 된 원인이 아프리카 신들의 분쟁 때문이었다는 작가의 신화적 성찰을 고찰한 부분이다. 3장은 카리브 흑인들의 투쟁 역사를 분석한 부분으로, 아메리카 최초의 팔렝케를 창설한 벵코스 비오호와 아이티의 흑인노예해방운동 및 콜롬비아와 멕시코의 독립운동까지 다루고 있다. 4장은 문학적 부분으로, 60년대 미국의 젊은 흑인여성 전사인 아그네 브라운이라는 가공인물과 해리엇터브먼(Harriet Tubman), 냇 터너(Nat Turner), 부커 T. 워싱턴(Booker T. Washington), 마커스 가비(Marcus Garvey), 맬컴 엑스(Malcom X) 등 실존인물들의 가상적 교류를 다루고 있는 부분이다. 이러한 교류를 통해 연대기적으로 기술된 다양한 흑인들의 투쟁역사가 본질적으로는 하나였음을 나타내고 있다. 콜롬비아의 팔렝케에서 미국 대도시까지 이어지는 오백 년 투쟁의 일관된 키워드는 바로 자유를 위한 투쟁이었다는 것이다. 마지막 5장에서는 작품의 문화적 코드들인 언어, 시간과 공간 개념, 종교 및 음악적 부분들에 대한 고찰을 통해 카리브 문화의 본질인 혼종문화적인 특징들을 살펴보고 있다.
We examine the Caribbean blacks`s history and culture in this article by analyzing Manuel Zapata Oliveira`s novel Chango, el gran putas(1983). We investigate the mythical, historical, literary, and cultural character of the work in six sections. We describe the mythical reflection of the origin of the Black Diaspora in Section II and the historical investigation of the struggles of blacks in the Caribbean region in Section III. We describe the literary nature of work in Section IV, and finally, in Section V, we explore the hybrid nature of Caribbean culture. Elucidating in more detail, we explain the mythologically beginning of the Black Diaspora in Section II, describing the African mythology and the black revolt on the slave ship. According to the mythology, blacks have to depart from Africa due to Shango`s fury. We analyze historically the whole process of the Caribbean black resistance in Section III, from Benkos Biojo, who formed the first Palenque in America, to the Mexican Independence Movement. We also analyze the Haitian Revolution in this section. We try to do a literary analysis in Section IV, proposing the exchange of Agne Brown, a fictitious character who is a young black American warrior in the 1960s, with historical figures in the likes of Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner, Booker T. Washington, Marcus Garvey, Malcom X, etc. The diversity of black history during the last 500 years is actually one that is the struggle for the liberty. We explain the hybrid character of Caribbean culture in the final section through the analysis of cultural code such as language, concept of time and space, religion, music, etc.
