17세기 초 로뻬에 의한 스페인 연극의 대대적인 혁신으로 형성된 ‘꼬메디아 누에바’는 여러 논란 끝에 결국은 엄청난 성공을 거두었고, 그 성공으로 인해 당시로서는 그 누구도 거스를 수 없는 대세가 되었다. 그러나 당시의 모든 스페인이 이 ‘꼬메디아 누에바’에 열광했던 것만은 아니다. 초창기에는 당시 극작술의 측면에서 너무나도 낯설었던 ‘꼬메디아 누에바’에 이의를 제기하는 자들도 있었고, 무엇보다도 ‘꼬메디아 누에바’에 윤리적 문제를 제기하며 격렬한 반대를 했던 교회는 종교 관련 극에서는 ‘꼬메디아 누에바’의 후원자였음에도 불구하 고 17세기 내내 ‘꼬메디아 누에바’의 지속적인 성공에 발목을 잡았던 대표적인 세력이었다. 윤리적 관점에서 교회가 주목한 ‘꼬메디아 누에바’의 부정적인 요소들은 무대의 배우, 연극 상연, 연극 소재라는 세 가지 측면을 중심으로 형성된 것이었다. 이 세 가지 사항들 중 무대 배우에 대한 것은 극문학의 범주에 속하는 문제가 아니므로 본 논문에서는 연극 상연과 연극 소재의 문제만 다루도록 한다. 우선 연극 상연과 관련된 문제로는 반(反)기독교적 남녀 관계의 묘사와 여배우의 남장(男裝)의 문제를 제시할 수 있는데, 첫째는 교회가 인정할 수 없는 부적절한 남녀관계, 즉 서로 부부의 관계를 맺지 않은 남녀가 어떤 동기에서든지 성적인 관계를 갖는 것을 의미한다. 로뻬와 띠르소의 여러 극에서는 이러한 부적절한 관계를 가지는 주인공들이 오히려 행복한 결말을 맞게 되는 데에 그 문제의 심각성이 있다. 그리고 여배우의 남장의 문제는 남장을 함으로써 여배우의 다리 윤곽이 그대로 관객들에게 노출되는 선정적인 효과가 연출되는 것을 의미하는데, 이 역시 ‘꼬메디아 누에바’에서 종종 발견되어지는 장면이 다. 다른 한 편, 교회가 문제 삼았던 당시 ‘꼬메디아 누에바’의 부적절한 극적 소재로는 근친상 간이나 친족살해와 같은 반인륜적 행위와 미신적이고 주술적인 요소를 지닌 반기독교적 행위를 그 예로 들 수 있는데, 이 역시 로뻬와 띠르소의 ‘꼬메디아 누에바’에서 어렵지 않게 찾을 수 있는 소재들로, 당시 교회와의 윤리적 논쟁의 대상이 되었던 대표적인 극적 소재들이 다. 결론적으로, ‘꼬메디아 누에바’를 통해 연극이 성공적으로 대중화됨으로써 이를 통해 좀 더 용이하게 대중들에게 기독교적 교리를 접근시킬 수 있는 기회가 생기게 되었다는 점에서 당시 교회는 ‘꼬메디아 누에바’의 대중적 성공을 어느 정도 긍정적으로 바라볼 수도 있었겠지만, 실상은 그 대중적 성공과는 무관하게 이상 살펴본 다양한 윤리적 이유들로 인해서 교회의 적지 않은 세력들이 ‘꼬메디아 누에바’에 적극적으로 반대하였던 것이다.

Comedia nueva`, which was formed by Lope as a grand-scale innovation of Spanish drama in the beginning of the 17th century, eventually won a great success after several controversies, and due to that success, it became a general trend which nobody can go against at that time. However, not all the Spanish of that time went crazy for this ``Comedia nueva``. In early days, there were people who raised objections to ``Comedia nueva``, which was too unfamiliar to the aspect of dramaturgy of that time, above all, the church, which strongly opposed it by posing ethical problems of ``Comedia nueva``, was the representative power to catch up with the continuous success of ``Comedia nueva`` during the whole 17th century, even though it was a sponsor of ``Comedia nueva`` in regard to religious drama. The negative elements of ``Comedia nueva`` which the church paid attention to in the viewpoint of ethics were formed mainly with the three aspects, i.e. stage actor, performance of play, and material of play. Among these three matters, the thing of stage actor is not the matter of dramatic literature, so that this thesis focused on performance of play and material of play. Above all, the matter of performance of play was related to the description of anti-christian man-woman relationship and actresses in male attire, since the former one means the inappropriate relationship which the church could not admit, i.e. a man and woman, who don`t have marital relations with each other, have sexual relations with any motive. There were even more serious problems in many of Lope and Tirso`s dramas, since the characters who had such inappropriate relations had happy endings. And the matter of actresses` male attire meant the lewd effect that actresses` leg silhouette was exposed as it was to the audience, due to male attire, which was also the scene that was frequently found in ``Comedia nueva``. On the other hand, the inappropriate dramatic subjects of ``Comedia nueva`` at that time which the church raised problems were antichristian deeds including crimes against humanity, superstitious and shamanistic elements, such as incest, killing of relative, etc., which were the subject materials that ccould be easily found in Lope and Tirso`s ``Comedia nueva``, which were the representative dramatic materials that became the target of ethical argument with the church of that time. In conclusion, the church could view the popular success of ``Comedia nueva`` positively to some degree, from the viewpoint that there was an opportunity to approach Christian doctrines to the public through this more easily, however in reality, due to the ethical reasons as above, which were unrelated to popular success, not a few of the power of the church actively opposed ``Comedia nueva``.
