자신을 일컬어 “나는 시를 쓰는 전사(戰士)”라 지칭했던 라틴아메리카의 대표적 저항시인 후안 헬만은 지난 1월 15일 유명(幽明)을 달리할 때까지 21세기 최고의 라틴아메리카시인 중 하나로 추앙받았다. 그의 작품세계에 관한 연구는, 시인의 이름 앞에 늘 따라붙는 ‘저항시인’이라는 칭호에 걸맞게 대부분 현실참여시와 시인의 조국 아르헨티나의 독재상황을 연결 짓는 관점에 머물러 왔으며 그의 작품 상당수가 ‘시란 무엇인가’, ‘시인은 누구인가’에 대한 메타시학적 성찰을 담고 있다는 사실은 상대적으로 간과되어 왔다. 본 연구는 후안 헬만의 시학, 그중에서도 자신의 시 작품 속에서 밝힌 시에 대한 그의 견해에 주목함으로써 시인의 메타시학적 성찰을 들여다보았다. 이를 위해 먼저 한국에 상대적으로 잘 알려져 있지 않은 시인의 작품 세계를 개괄적으로 살펴보고, 메타시학적 특성을 지닌 시인의 작품분석을 통해 시에 대한 시인의 견해를 시의 탄생, 시대현실에 대한 저항의 도구로서의 시와 그 저항 가운데 무력했던 시에 대한 절망, 선택받은 자에서 범인(凡人)의 자리로 내려와 민중과 함께, 민중의 자리에 선 시인의 모습과 시의 무기력함에 절망했음에도 불구하고 민중 속에서 삶의 한 방식이 된 시에서 새로운 희망을 찾고 시에의 헌신을 약속하는 시인의 모습으로 나누어 살펴보았다.

Juan Gelman, one of the most representative and famous poets of resistance in Latin America, called himself as “a warrior who writes poems” and until his death on Jan. 15th of current year he had been an object of veneration as one of the best Latin American poets in the 21st century. Most of the studies and academic articles about him had been focused on the relations between Argentine dictatorship and his poetry of resistance and social commitment, and the fact that a large number of his works was dedicated to the metapoetic reflections of the poet himself was relatively overlooked. So, in this article we paid attention to the Juan Gelman`s poetics, especially to the poet`s thoughts about ‘what is the poetry?’ and ‘who is the poets?’ For this, in the first place, the observation in general of the Juan Gelman`s poetic works was done and, after that, through the analysis of his poems which contain metapoetic reflections, we`ve described his poetics in the order of the poetry`s birth, poetry as an instrument of resistance against this era`s reality, despair of the poet owing to the incapacity of the poetry to change the world, poets as ordinary people or one of the everyone, and the poet`s compromise to the dedication to the poetry, despite of the despair, as he sees new hope when the poetry becomes the life itself of the ordinary people.
