본 연구는 한국과 독일의 현대적 전기에서 나타나는 서사적 특징은 무엇이며, 전기의 이러한 특징이 인문학적 정신의 고양과 발현에 있어서 어떤 의미가 있는가를 밝히는 것에 있다. 전기는 문학적인 특성과 역사적 또는 개인적 사실의 기록에 근거하는 이중적인 특징을 갖는다. 이러한 의미에서 전기는 문학이며, 동시에 과학이라고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 일반적으로 전기는 문학의 한 형식으로 간주되며, 전기야말로 최초의 문학형식이라고 말한다. 이러한 주장은 전기의 본질 역시 문학의 본질인 이야기에 근거하기 때문이다. 다만 전기는 사실상 실존했던 사람의 구체적인 삶에 대한 이야기라는 점에서 순수한 ‘허구’가 아니라, ‘사실’에 대한 이야기라는 점에서 차이가 있다. 다시 말하면 전기는 작가에 의해서 사실적 이야기로서 재구성되고, 표현된다는 점에서 전기는 문학 안에서 독특한 위치를 갖는다. 본 연구는 바로이 지점에서 전기가 인문학적 텍스트로서의 대단히 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다는 문제인식에서 출발한다. 전기를 통해서 우리는 한 개인의 ‘이미 살아버린 삶’을 현재의 관점에서, ‘자신의 삶’의 관점에서 이해하고 해석하며, 나가서 삶의 다양한 형식과 고유함에 대해 소통하며 공감한다. 이러한 전기가 인문학적 가치와 정신을 함양하는 텍스트로서 중요한 역할을 담당할 수 있다는 인식은 전기의 역할이 인문학의 본질적인 가치들을 이야기 형식으로 전달하고 있다는 이해에서 출발한다. 인문학적 가치와 정신이란 인간에 대한 이해와 인간성의 발현에 있다. 그리고 이러한 가치가 실제적으로 구현되는 공간은 공동체 안에서 이루어지는 개인의 삶을 통해서이다. 인문학의 가치는 공동체적인 삶에 대한 전제에서 시작되기 때문이다. 이러한 관점에서 인문 정신은 역사, 사회, 문화의 상호관계에 대한 총체적 이해와 태도를 함의하는 것으로 본다면, 인문학은 사람다움의 가치를 인식하고 사람다운 삶을 지향하는 것에 의미를 두고 있다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서 전기의 서사적 특성이 인문학 텍스트로서의 바람직한 역할을 담당할 수 있다고 보는 데에는 다음과 같은 이유에 근거한다. 전기는 개인의 삶과 ‘공적인 삶’이 어떻게 교차하는가 하는 문제를 ‘사실’이라는 틀 속에서 구체적인 이야기를 통해서 들려준다. 그리고 개인의 삶이 당시의 역사적 조건과 사회적 구조, 그리고 문화적 환경과 어떻게 상호 작용하는가를 보여준다. 다시 말하면 한 개인과 개인이 속한 사회 공동체의 다양한 조건들, 문화, 역사, 도덕적 가치가 서로 어떠한 의미작용을 하며, 이에 대한 개인의 선택과 행위방식이 어떤 것인가를 이야기한다. 이러한 사실적 서사를 통해서 전기의 독자는 이미 있었던 과거의 사건을 있을 수 있는 ‘사건‘으로 이해하면서 간접적으로 경험할 수 있다는 것이다. 이러한 의미에서 전기는 인간과 인간의 삶에 대한 이해를 높일 수 있으며, 전기의 독특한 구조와 형식은 인문학 텍스트로서 의미 있는 역할을 담당할 수 있다고 보는 것이다.

The purpose of this research is to find out what kind of literary characteristic appears from biographical literature, what meanings the characteristic of biographical literature have when it comes to enhance and revelation of liberal spirit, also what function it can do. Biographical literature has twofold characteristic. The reason is that literary characteristic and historical truth are the conditions of biographical literature. In these sense biography is literature and science at the same time. However generally biography is regarded as one kind of literature, and biography is said to be the first and oldest form of literature. These arguments are based on the fact that story is the nature of biography. It is because biography is s story about the life of a person. Biography premises realistic and specific record of life, and based upon this realistic record the story is formed. Biographical literature has very important meaning as humanistic text due to the fact that biography is not ``pure fiction`` but it is expressed by reconstituted stories of specific records of life, which is ``true``. Through biographical literature we can experience ``the life one has left behind`` as ``our life`` by understanding and interpreting the life one has left behind from the point of view now we occupy. On this account biographical literature is fine medium to look back one`s life through other`s life. By biographical literature, readers can understand various forms of life and directly experience ``sympathy and communication`` about uniqueness of life. The perspective that biographical literature can take important role as a text which fosters liberal value and spirit, meets with the understanding of essence of humanities. Liberal value and spirit is understanding human and humanity development. Overall understanding and attitude of life, like historical, social, cultural, compose humanistic system of meaning. Moreover, these meanings of humanities accord with the value and meaning of biographical literature. Biographical literature exposes historical conditions, social structure and culture background through one`s life. Also biographical literature specifically and empirically reveals that personal life and ``public life`` communicates and interacts. In other words, by biographical literature it can be seen how one person and the conditions of a society that person belongs, like cultural, historical and moral value, act with each other. And it can also be seen the meaning of a person`s choice and action in the interaction. Furthermore, these are done by the ``stories`` which is most closest method when humans are communicating. That is, semantic content of human life in biographical literature serves excellent function as an text that help readers to understand life and human through biographical literature`s unique structure and form. From this point of view this research has arrived at a conclusion that biographical literature, as humanistic text, can perform highly meaningful function.
