The Red Tent (1997) is a novel written by Anita Diamant focusing on Dinah, the only daughter of Jacob. In the Old Testament, women were suppressed and their voices were unheard for the most part. The story of Dinah in Genesis 34 is one of the best examples of this male-dominated narrative. This paper aims to review the novel by comparing it to the biblical text. First, I will reread the story of Dinah`s rape and her brothers` vengeance in Genesis 34 from the feminist perspective. Then, I will listen to Dinah`s voice telling her love story in the novel. In Genesis, Dinah appears to be a victim of rape, however, she never speaks out herself in this significant episode of her life. Instead, the male characters arrange her marriage and handle the "bride price," or dowry themselves. It never mentions how Dinah feels for Shechem, the rapist and suitor, and how she reacts to the murder of her betrothed by her brothers. In the novel, the author tries to explore these questions in Dinah`s voice. Dinah herself is the first-person narrator and protagonist. She tells that her encounter with Shechem is not rape but consensual sex in anticipation of marriage. Dinah willingly wants to marry Shechem but is horrified and grieved by her brothers` bloody massacre of her husband. The Red Tent is "a hypertext of patriarchal saga", and it gives voice to a female character whom the Bible never allows to speak for herself. This fiction gives the readers a new insight into the biblical text and an understanding of women characters in the Bible.
