이 글은 이제까지 제대로 연구되지 못한 한흑구의 미국 체험이 담겨 있는 소설과 수필, 평론 등의 문학 작품을 통해, 한흑구가 식민지 조선인으로서 드러낸 미국 인식과 조선적 정체성에 대해 고찰하려는 것이다. 한흑구는 6여년의 미국 생활 중에 샌프란시스코에서 발간되는 『대한민보』에 시와 평론을 발표했고, 귀국하여서는 미국 생활 경험을 바탕으로 한 수필뿐만 아니라 시, 소설, 평론 등의 작업들도 꾸준히 진행하였다. 이러한 한흑구의 문학은 일제 식민지 당시 작가가 경험한 미국 유학의 경험이 자신의 정체성을 형성하는 데 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는가를 살펴볼 수 있다는 점에서 매우 중요한 의미가 있다. 그는 미국을 체험하면서 물질주의의 냉정함을 단지 환멸적으로만 보지 않고, 그 안에서 미국이 가진 열정을 찾으려 스스로 다지고 노력하였으며, 이를 몸소 행동으로 실천하고자 애썼던 것이다. 그의 호 ‘흑구’ 검은 까마귀는 자신의 신념이자 미국 유학 중에서도 자신의 주체성을 지킬 수 있는 힘과도 같은 것이었고, ‘조선인적 태도’가 그의 삶에서 가장 중요한 화두였던 것임을 알 수 있다. 이러한 한흑구의 미국 유학 경험들과 학문적 성취들은 귀국 이후 조선 내 구국활동과 문학 활동에도 꾸준히 영향을 끼치고 있었다.

This paper explores the consciousness to America and the identity as Koreans which are through American experience described in the novels, essays, and critical journals of Han Huk-gu. During Han`s American staying in six years, he published the poems and critical journals in Daehanmin-bo come out San Francisco. After returning home from America He continuedly wrote poems, novels, critical journals with the basis of the American experience as well as writing the essays. At this juncture, Han`s literature has important meaning of the fact that his working has major effects on building up the Koreans identity under the colonialism from Japan. As Han lived and experienced America, he did not see the American materialistic handedness as a disillusional aspect but made an effort to find out the passion in America. His nickname Huk-gu that means a black crow is his belief and also power keep his subjectivity in staying in America. To have the Koreans Attitude for him was the main idea in his life. Last but not least, the experience of Han`s American life and the academic achievement made effects on saving his nation and literary working after returning home.
