‘사운드스케이프 문화론’은 시각과 청각의 이분법을 따르지 않는다. 소리와 듣기를 초역사화된 개별 감각의 본성 속에서 규정하는 작업에 반대하며, 이른바 ‘소리의 문화사’로 분류되는 연구 경향과도 구별되고자 한다. ‘사운드스케이프 문화론’은 오히려 ‘몸만들기의 문화사’에 더 가깝다. 이 연구에서 ‘소리’란 청각에 한정된 현상만이 아니라 몸 전체로 체험하는 ‘울림’을 의미한다. ‘사운드스케이프(soundscape)’는 물리적인 음(音)부터 정동적 에너지, 정보의 흐름 등이 총망라된 세계와 몸이 상호작용하는 관계망을 뜻한다. 이 울림의 관계망을 미디어 환경과 신체화 상호작용을 중심으로 접근하려는 시도가 이 연구가 지향하는 ‘사운드스케이프 문화론’이다. 인간의 환경세계를 둘러싼 각종 장치가 새롭게 구성되고, 그 장치들에 얽힌 사회 정치 경제의 연결망이 어떻게 변화하고 있는지 추적하는 역사적 작업이다.

Soundscape Culture` does not follow the dichotomy between the visual and auditory.
