설화는 언어의 기능을 확장한 미디어 구실을 한다. 어떤 지식이나 정보가 설화에 담기면 널리 전파되고 오래 전승되어 공유의 시공간적 폭이 확대된다. 지명은 일정한 지리 정보를 담고 있지만, 지명유래와 지명전설로 나아갈수록 그 정보의 양이 풍부하고 질이 높아지며 다양한 인문지리 정보를 담게 된다. 지명은 고유명사로서 하나의 뜻만 지닌 것이 아니라, 한 장소에 지명이 여럿인 경우, 한 지명에 유래와 전설이 여럿인 경우, 한 전설에 여러 지명의 유래가 밝혀지는 경우 등 다양하다. 지명을 고유명사로 보면 하나가 정상이지만 그 지역의 인문지리 정보를 담고 있는 미디어로 보면 여럿을 인정해야 한다. 지명이 시대와 계층, 역사적 사실 등을 반영하는 까닭에 다양성을 인정할수록 인문지리적 이해의 폭을 넓힐 수 있다. 지명전설에는 지리적 위치 정보는 물론, 그 지역의 역사와 종교, 사회, 인물, 문화 등에 대한 풍부한 인문지리 정보가 담겨 있다. 지명전설을 주목하면 잃어버린 역사를 찾을 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 구비문학으로서 인문학적 지식과 정보를 다각적으로 포착할 수 있다. 그러므로 지명전설을 조사연구하면 한자 지명에 나타난 지배층의 가치관과 다른 민중들의 세계관을 해명할 수 있다. 지명과 지명전설은 특정 지점을 찾아가는 지리적 좌표가 아니라, 역사와 문화와 철학의 공간을 만나고 인식하는 인문지리 정보의 박물관이다. 그런데 지금 개편된 도로명 주소는 인문지리 정보를 담고 있는 지명을 말살하고 있다. 인문학계에서는 도로명 주소를 반대하는 운동과 함께, 지명 유래와 전설 조사를 전국적으로 실시하여 인문지리 정보를 총체적으로 수집하고 보존하는 운동을 벌여야 마땅하다. 왜냐하면 지명자료가 담고 있는 인문지리 정보야말로 땅의 인문학문을 살리는 길이기 때문이다.
Folk tale plays a role of media which extends the function of the language. Folk tale containing the any kind of knowledge and information travels far and wide and is handed down long, which extends the spatio-temporal range. Geographical name will contain a certain geographical information. However, as we go toward the origin and legend of geographical name, the information will be huge in its amount, high in quality and rich in anthropogeographical diversity. A variety of cases will happen in that not only does a geographical name have one meaning as a proper noun but also a place has more than a geographical name, furthermore a legend has more than an origin of geographical name. A geographical name is normal to have one in the light of proper noun. However, it should be admitted that a geographical name has more than one in the light of media containing the anthropogeographical information. As a geographical name reflects the age, the classes, the historical facts, the recognition of diversity would widen the dimension of anthropogeographical understanding. Rich anthropogeographical informations of history, religion, society, people, culture in that area as well as the geographical location information are contained in the geographical name legend. Not only would attention to the geographical name legend recover the lost history, but also it would capture the multi-faceted knowledge and information of humanities as oral literature. Accordingly, the research of geographical name legend would make it possible to elucidate the values of the ruling class revealed in Chinese character geographical name and other people`s world-view. Geographical name and geographical name legend are not the geographic coordinates for a specific spot but a museum of anthropogeographical information in which we can come across and recognize the space of history, culture and philosophy. However, reorganized road names based address have obliterated the geographical names containing the anthropogeographical information. It is desirable that a nationwide survey of the origin and legend of geographical name should be conducted to collect and preserve the anthropogeographical information on the whole along with the campaign against the road name based address in the circle of the humanities. This is why the very anthropogeographical information containing the data of geographical name can vitalize the humanities of earth.
