이글은 역사성과 지역성을 포용하는 관점에서 역사적 지역성 또는 지역적 역사성의 문제를 살펴보기 위해 담양과 장흥의 가사문학을 비교.검토한 것이다. 담양의 경우 질적 측면에서 조선전기 가사가 중심을 이루고 있으며 이들 가사에서는 강한 외부 지향성이 드러나고 있다. 그리고 이런 담양의 가사가 지닌 외부 지향은 조선후기 가사에서도 어느 정도 이어지고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 반면 장흥의 경우에는 백광홍의 <관서별곡>을 제외하면 모든 작품이 조선후기에 집중되어 있고 이들 가사는 지역내부의 단결과 결속을 도모하는 내부 지향성을 강하게 드러내고 있다. 담양의 가사가 조선전기는 물론이고 조선후기에도 강한 외부 지향성을 보이게 된 것은 담양 일대에서는 그래야 지배양반 행세를 할 수 있었기 때문이다. 담양의 가사에서 흔히 발견되는 연군의식은 양반의 품격을 결정하는 네 가지 조건 중 충절(忠節)과 환관(宦官)을 동시에 얻을 수 있는 것이었음에 주목할 필요가 있다. 반면 장흥의 장흥위씨나 인천이씨는 동족마을 내부의 결속을 도모하는 방식을 통해 장흥 지역 향반으로서의 위상을 굳건하게 다져갔던 것으로 보인다.

This paper compared and reviewed the Gasa between Damyang and Jangheung to discuss the issues of historical locality or local historicity from a perspective of embracing both historicity and locality. In Damyang, the Gasa works created in the former half of Joseon were dominant in terms of quality and exhibited a strong external orientation, which was transmitted in the Gasa works created in the second half of Joseon to some degree. In Jangheung, all of Gasa works were concentrated in the second half of Joseon except for Gwanseobyeolgok by Baek Gwang-hong and exhibited a strong internal orientation of promoting solidarity and unity within the community. The Gasa works of Damyang got to have a strong external orientation both in the former and latter half of Joseon because it was needed to assume the position of the ruling noblemen in the area. It is needed to note that yearning for the king commonly found in the Gasa works of Damyang guaranteed the fulfillment of both loyalty and government position, two of the four conditions to determine the dignity of noblemen. In Jangheung, on the other hand, the Wui family of Jangheung and the Lee family of Incheon firmly consolidated their status of local elites in the area by promoting the internal unity of their clan villages.
