본고에서는 『겐지모노가타리』속에 보이는 <命>의 표현을 통해 이 작품의 사생관의 특징을 살펴보고 <命>의 표현과 작품 주제와의 관련에 대해 고찰하였다. 먼저 기리쓰보 고이(更衣)와 기리쓰보 천황에 보이는 <命>의 비탄표현이 두 인물의 내면을 비추어내면서 비련 이야기의 주제에 깊이 관여하고 있음을 살펴보았다. 이어서 <命>의 무상함의 표현이 주인공 겐지의 여성에 대한 사랑의 맹세 표현, 혹은 사랑의 집착과 상실이라는 주제와 관련되어 있음을 논하였다. 한편 장수(長壽)와 연명(延命)에 관한 <命>의 표현은 겐지의 영화(榮華)와 단명(短命)의 우려 속에 보이는데, 겐지의 죄와 구원의 문제와 깊이 관련되어 있었다. 사랑과 관련한 <命>의 표현에 관해서는 그것이 겐지의 무라사키노우에 를 향한 사랑과 고뇌, 가시와기의 죽음의 지향, 니오노미야의 사랑의 열정을 인상적으로 그려나가는데 크게 관여하고 있음을 밝혔다. 마지막으로 무라사키노우에, 오이기미, 우키후네의 <命>의 표현을 통해 남녀의 사랑의 의미를 되물으며 주체적인 삶을 찾아 고뇌하는 여성들의 존재성이 조명되어 있음을 살펴보았다.

The goal of this thesis is to investigate the characteristics of thoughts on life and death through the expression, ``Inochi``, in Genjimonogatari and the relationship between the term of Inochi and the theme of this work. First of all, this thesis deal with the expression of ``Inohi``, which shows Kiritsubo Koi and the king named Kiritsubo grief, reveals two characters`` introspection and is strongly connected to this tragic story. In this thesis, it has discussed the relationship between the term of ``Inochi``, which shows impermanence, and main character named Genji whose love for women and oath for them, or attachment and loss of love. Oh the other hand, the expression of ``Inohi`` related to long life and the prolongation of life shows the relationship between Genji``s glory and short life. This is strongly connected to Genji``s guilty and redemption. Moreover it covers that ``Inohi`` related to love gets involved in Genji``s love and agony toward Muraskinoue, aim for death of Kashiwagi, passion of love from Niounomiya. At last, it handles that women``s existence that tries to figure out active life is illuminated through the expression of ``Inohi`` in Murasakinoue, Oigimi, and Ukifune.
