이항복은 임진왜란 당시 선조를 호종하면서, 전쟁을 승리로 이끄는데 중요한 공헌을 하였던 인물이다. 이러한 이항복의 활동에 대한 문학적 형상은 <임진록>을 포함하여 야담, 설화, 활자본 역사전기류에 이르기까지 다양한 작품을 통해 확인해 볼 수 있다. 그리고 작품에 나타난 이항복의 형상은 명나라의 구원병을 맞이하거나 신이한 존재의 도움을 받아 이여송을 데려오는 등의 활동에 집중되어 있다. 그런데 이러한 과정에서 역사적으로 행하지 않은 사실도 이항복의 형상에 덧붙여지게 된다. 또한 류성룡의 활동을 이항복이 행한 것으로 나타나기도 한다. 즉 이항복의 형상이 허구적으로 변화하면서 확대되었는데, 이는 임진왜란 이후 전개된 전쟁에 대한 평가 및 인식과 관련되어 있다. 명나라의 구원병으로 인해 전쟁에서 승리하게 되었다는 인식으로 인하여, 구원병을 맞이하는데 중요한 역할을 하였던 이항복의 활동이 중시되었던 것이다.
