이 글은 20세기 말 일어난 정지용의 시 「비」에 관한 논쟁 이후를 조명하는 시도이다. 동양시학에 토대를 둔 「비」해석의 논쟁 이후에도 새로운 의견이 계속 제시되어왔다. 이들은 「비」의 높은 미학적 가치를 증명하고 있으나 한편으로는 기존의 견해를 부정하고 서로 대립하며 정리의 필요성을 제기했다. 이 글은 이들의 견해를 정리하면서 동시에 새로운 의견을 첨가하려 했다. 논지의 세부는 다음과 같다. 「비」의 계절적 배경은 늦가을이 적절하다. 시의 전반부에서는 그늘이 차오르다가 아니라 차갑다고 보았고 소소리 바람을 회오리바람으로 해석했다. 후반부는 가물었던 계곡에 마치 손가락 펴듯물길이 생기고 물이 불어나는 것으로, 마지막은 비가 다시 내려 나뭇잎이 빗방울을 머금은 것으로 파악했다.

This article aims at reviewing trends after the debate on the poem Rain written by Jeong Ji Yong in the late 20th Century. After the debates on interpretation of Rain based on Asian poetics, new opinions have been suggested.. Though these prove higher aesthetic values of Rain but deny the previous opinions, suggesting conclusions with oppositions. This article reviews these previous opinions and adds new idea to them. If the situation in Rain is supposed that it started to rain in late fall, the front part of the poem are concluded with possibilities of ‘cold shadow’ and ‘whirlwind’. In the later part, describing that a glimpse of water is made like unfolding fingers and water grows in dried valleys, the final part is interpreted as sprouting of rain drops not raining again. In the process to suggest this opinion, higher aesthetic value of Rain was confirmed.
