본 연구의 목적은 중증장애인의 비장애 형제들이 중증장애인의 형제로 살아가는 생활세계 경험을 이해하는 것이다. 중증장애형제와 함께 성장해온 6명의 참여자들을 심층면담하고, 현상학적 질적연구방법으로 분석하여 참여자들의 경험과 그 의미를 드러내고자 하였다. 현상을 있는 그대로 기술하는 데에 중점을 두는 Moustakas의 연구절차를 통해 다음과 같은 5개의 대주제가 도출되었다. 중증장애인의 형제로 살아가는 경험은 첫째, “장애형제의 주변에서 적응하기”, 둘째, “가족의 문제에 대해침묵하기”, 셋째, “장애와 비장애의 경계에 서기”, 넷째, “표현되지 못했던 복잡한 감정”, 마지막으로 “나의 삶으로 보듬어 안기”이었다. 이 연구는 가족에게 높은 의존도를 가지는 중증장애인과 함께 살아가는 형제 됨의 경험을 있는 그대로 드러내고, 중증장애의 가족구성원들의 내밀한 경험을 이해함으로써 적절한 상담적 개입을 제공할 수 있는 기초자료를 제공했다는 의의를 갖는다.

This study aimed to understand the life world of non-handicapped siblings of severely disabled people by conducting interviews with them and draw common concepts through a process of analysis afterwards. A total of 6 adults who grew up with severely disabled person participated in unstructured in-depth interactive interview. To explore participants` experience, analysis process based on phenomenological qualitative methodology was used in this study. As a result, the following theme cluster-theme appeared with 5 sub themes: “accepting a life which I did not choose”, “an elephant in the living room”, “special but ordinary”, “an expressless emotion”, and “the future sharing with a handicapped sibling”. This study demonstrated the experience as the non-handicapped siblings of severely disabled people who are highly dependent upon their family members. Therefore it is expected that this study will be the basic material for providing an alternative by understanding their life.
