This study examined the mediating role of shame and self-oriented perfectionism in the relationship between pathological narcissism and maladaptive self-presentation. Pathological narcissism was measured in terms of narcissistic grandiosity and narcissistic vulnerability while maladaptive self-presentation was measured in terms of ideal self-presentation and self-concealment. Self-report questionnaires from 385 (N=385) undergraduate students were analyzed using the structural equation modeling. Results indicated that the effect of narcissistic vulnerability on self-concealment and ideal self-presentation was mediated by shame. Second, the effect of narcissistic grandiosity on ideal self-presentation was mediated by self-oriented perfectionism. The effect of narcissistic grandiosity on self-concealment was mediated by self-oriented perfectionism. In the partial mediation model with a better fit indices, however, self-oriented perfection did not mediate the effect of narcissistic grandiosity on self-concealment. These findings supported that narcissistic vulnerability tends to actively conceal more negative or imperfect self-aspect and present perfect or more ideal self-aspect to protect an unstable self-esteem and defend against vulnerability for shame. Results confirmed that narcissistic grandiosity tends to present perfect or ideal self-aspects in order to maintain grandiose self-image, while, the effect of narcissistic grandiosity on self concealment needs further investigation. Implications of the current findings for clinical practice and research on pathological narcissism are discussed along with limitations of current study and suggestions for future investigations.
