As an effort to examine the influence of on later narrative literature, this study aimed to identify the patterns of new novels’ potential acceptance of through a number of new novels(신소설) showing character types and problem awareness similar to those of , though not conscious of explicitly. For this study, three new novels , and were selected. According to the results of this study, the setting of the three novels was similar to that of in that a poor or equivalent character attains an economic success through accidental fortune in a highly materialistic society. Furthermore, a Heungbu.type character confronts a Nolbu.type one, and in case only a Heungbu.type character appears extreme poverty is presented as in . In addition, the ethical problem of money is recalled by two characters with contrastive disposition. However, these works showed a difference from in that they rationalize the way of attaining wealth, which is left to the transcendental world in . In and , the main characters become rich thanks to, respectively, a money bag and a bundle of bank notes found by accident. In , accidental fortune is rationalized through a love affair with a modernized woman. Furthermore, and show characters who, though of Heungbu type, are smart in calculation and evolve to a diligent and frugal person. In , such a character does not cover up his desire for wealth and sometimes tells a lie, suggesting that it is not easy to live the world at all. On the contrary, , a Korean translation of a Japanese performing art work, does not go beyond passive satisfaction with being a laborer.
