이 연구는 제주방언 종결어미의 체계 안의 평서형 종결어미 ‘-게’의 의미를 화용론적으로 설명하는 것이다. 종결어미 체계 안의 평서형 종결어미 ‘-게’의 의미는 화자의 담화전략에 따라서 결정된다. 청자의 반응에 대한 화자의 요청의 정도, 어조의 변화가 중요한 조건이다. 제주방언 평서형 종결어미 ‘-게’는 화자의 확인 요청의 정도와 대상에 따라 화자 지향적인 주관적 확인과 청자 지향적 객관적 확인의 화행 기능을 수행한다. 평서형 종결어미 ‘-게’가 화자 지향적 확인의 경우 독백, 방백의 형식으로 수행된다. 이 경우 평서형 종결어미 ‘-게’의 어조는 수평조이지만, 청자 지향적 확인인 경우는 상승조, 장모음으로 발화한다. 평서형 종결어미 ‘-게’의 수행의미와 상관성을 가진 것으로서 평서형의 ‘-녜’가 있다. 이 평서형 종결어미 ‘-녜’는 청자 지향적 객관적인 확인의 양태성으로 기능한다. 평서형 종결어미 ‘-녜’는 화자가 체험, 확인한 사실에 대한 판단에 청자가 동의해 줄 것을 요청하는 의미가 ‘-게’보다 강하다. 평서형 종결어미 ‘-녜’의 어조는 평서형 종결어미 ‘-게’의 청자 지향적 확인인 경우와 동일하게 어조는 상승조, 장모음으로 발화 수행된다.

This paper shows that the Jeju dialect sentence-final endings ‘-ge’ and ‘-nye’ express a confirmative speech act. The modality of Jeju dialect sentence-final endings, ‘-ge’ and ‘-nye’ should be related to the expectation of the speaker on the answers of the hearer and the intonation of sentence-final endings, ‘-ge’ and ‘-nye’ of the speaker. The sentence-final endings of Jeju dialect, ``-ge``, ``-nge``, and ``-nye`` have the modality of confirmation in common. According to the perspective of confirmation and the intonation, ``-ge`` and ``-nge`` are subdivided into the subjective confirmation toward the speaker and the objective confirmation toward the hearer. ``-ge`` and ``-nge`` in case of the confirmation toward the speaker have the meaning of monologue and stage whisper. The final ending, ``-nye`` perform the function as the modality of the objective confirmation toward the hearer. The hearer should respond necessarily because ``-nye`` is the discourse strategy which reconfirms the fact the speaker confirms to the hearer. The final ending, ``-nye`` has the strong meaning of the request for the agreement of the hearer about the judgement of the speaker himself/herself.
