본 연구는 19세기에 활동한 영국의 작곡가 존 필드의 피아노 협주곡 제5번에 관한 것이다. 19세기의 협주곡은 연주자의 기교와 기량을 펼쳐 보이는 것이 주된 목적인 비르투오조 협주곡과 관현악과 독주악기가 복합적인 예술체로 표현되는 교향악적 협주곡 두 부류로 구분된다. 그렇지만 문학적 내용을 담은 교향시라는 장르처럼 낭만시대의 협주곡에서도 표제와 프로그램을 다루는 내러티브 협주곡이라는 유형이 존재하였다. 그러한 협주곡의 첫 번째 예로 들 수 있는 필드의 피아노 협주곡 제5번은 ``폭풍우``라는 제목을 가지고 있다. 악곡에 대한 연구와 분석을 통하여 이 작품이 베토벤의 전원 교향곡처럼 묘사적인 제목을 가지고 있는 협주곡인지 아니면 다른 낭만시대의 교향시와 같은 장르처럼 작품 전체가 어떤 음악적인 이야기를 전하고 있는 프로그램 음악인지를 파악하였다. 분석 결과 총 3악장으로 구성되어 있는 이 작품에서 제목과 관련된 음악적 묘사가 나오는 부분은 첫 번째 악장의 중간부분이고 이 부분에서 폭풍우가 음악적으로 표현되어 있는데 아주 효과적인 관현악법을 통하여서 그리고 피아노의 다양한 음형을 통하여 이루어진 것을 발견 할 수 있었다.

This study focuses on Piano concerto No. 5 in C Major by Irish Romantic composer John Field who is known as an progenitor of Nocturn, a famous genre by Chopin. There are two types of 19th century concertos. One is called virtuoso concerto, which displays brilliant techniques of solo performer and the other is called symphonic concerto that is a complex art form for both orchestra and soloist. But there is another type called narrative concerto which tells the story or depicts an object as symphonic poem does. One of the first examples is the Piano concerto No. 5 by Field which has a subtitle of L’Orage, the storm. Through the analysis of the work, it is discovered that the title is musically well described in the middle section of the first movement through delicate orchestration and splendid piano writings including scale passages and figurations. But the other two movements do not show any kind of relationship with the title.
