This study is aimed to reveal differences of communication methods in suggestion scenes between Korean and Japanese languages. For this, college students from the two countries were investigated using Discourse Completion Test (DCT). In proposal scenes with a less burden against those in equivalent relationship at first confrontation, differences in communication methods were analyzed. The analysis revealed the followings: i) Japanese language was more polite than Korean language. In particular, a caring stance against others using ‘caring for others’ expressions was confirmed. ii) In Korean language, on the contrary, a suggestion was made in the pattern of ‘mentioning the reason’ and ‘suggesting behavior.’ In particular, ‘listening to reason and intention’ was often observed. When compared to the results of ‘suggestion scene with a less burden against an intimate equivalent counter party,’ in addition, the followings were confirmed. In ‘scenes with a less burden against an equivalent counter party,’ ① Japanese language is more polite than Korean in making a suggestion. ② Japanese language was the same with Korean language in that it makes a proposal using ‘mentioning the reason.’ ③ In Japanese language, however, ‘caring for others’ was more common against those first confronted. ④ In contrast, it differed from Korean language in that it does not use ‘terms of exchange’ against those first confronted.
