本稿では、從來硏究が盛んに行なわれてこなかった美化語を取り上げ、その說明モデルを構築するための足がかりを提供する。まず、今までの先行硏究で培われてきた知見を批判的に檢討することを通し、美化語の說明モデルの必須要件を明示化する。そして、有用と思われる理論的アプロ一チを素描する。具體的には、美化語の硏究には統語的な分析よりも、意味·語用論的な分析の方が妥當であり、一つの可能性として關連性理論の□組みにおける分析を示唆する。

This article addresses “beautified speech” in Japanese, a phenomenon that has received little attention in the literature, and provides a foundation to construct a theoretical model of beautified speech. We shall first critically examine previous studies and clarify several prerequisites for an account of beautified speech. We shall then claim that the syntactic analysis is not particularly suitable for the treatment of beautified speech, and that the semantic-pragmatic analysis offers a natural solution. As a candidate of a semantic-pragmatic approach, a preliminary analysis is suggested within the framework of Relevance Theory.
