네그리튀드 운동이 본격화되기 전에 출간되었던 흑인들의 잡지 『정당방어』나 『흑인들의 외침』은 그 중요성에도 불구하고 마르크스주의나 초현실주의적인 노력이었지 네그리튀드 잡지는 아니는 말로 무시당했다. 이와 관련하여 본 연구가 취하는 입장은 외래 사상을 받아들였는지의 기준으로 진정한 흑인문화운동인지 아닌지를 평가한다면 『흑인학생』의 창간인들인 세제르, 생고르, 다마스의 활동도 네그리튀드에서 제외되는 모순이 생긴다는 것이다. 너무나 중요한 사실이지만 기성 연구에서 좀처럼 지적되지 않는 사실은, 『흑인학생』의 창간호에서 이 핵심인물들이 외래의 서양 사상으로부터 거리두기를 하는 부분을 찾기가 힘들다는 점이다. 순수한 아프리카의 정신을 노래했을 때조차도 네그리튀드 운동은 마르크스주의와 초현실주의 같은 유럽의 사상과 문화를 수용하였다는 것이 본 연구가 주장하는 바이다. 구체적으로 본 연구에서는 『정당방어』에서 시작하여 후기의 세제르와 생고르에 이르는 프랑스어권 흑인문화운동이 마르크스주의를 왜 수용하게 되었으며, 또 어떤 이유에서 거리를 두게 되었는지, 식민 해방 이후 이들이 마르크스주의에 대해서 취한 입장은 이전과 어떤 점에서 다른 것인지를 분석함으로써, 이들이 마르크스주의와 맺은 관계의 사상적 지도를 그려내고자 한다.

Francophone black journals published in the twenties and thirties, such as Le Cri des negres and Legitime defense, have been dismissed by Negritude critics as Marxist or surrealist endeavors, not genuine Negritude journals. This paper takes issue with such a dismissal by arguing that if affiliation with European ideas or ideologies is regarded as a disqualifying cause for a negritude, then the movement led by the so-called holy trinity of L`Etudiant noir, that is, Senghor, Cesaire, and Damas, should be disqualified too. What does not receive due attention from Negritude scholars despite its crucialness, is that these three key figures of Negritude did not distance themselves from the European ideas or ideologies of their days. In this regard, they were not much different from the founders of Legitime defense whom Senghor later criticized for their indebtedness to Western ideas. Among the European influences that definitely attracted these black colonials studying in Paris were Marxism and surrealism. This paper brings to light the way the black intellectuals from French colonies adopted and used Marxism, why they then came to distance themselves from it, and how different their positions on it in the postcolonial era were from those in the colonial era. In so doing, this paper maps the trajectory of the affiliation between Negritude movement and Marxism.
