이 글은 내재적 성찰의 입장에서 2010년 8월 15일 서울 중앙대학교에서 개최되었던 제19차 국제비교문학회 세계대회가 한국비교문학자에게 남긴 과제가 무엇인지 찾아 보는 글이다. 이 대회에 참가했던 외국 비교문학자들은 이 대회를 매우 성공적인 대회로 평가한다. 아울러, 이로 인해 한국비교문학의 국제적 위상도 어느 정도 격상된 듯 하다. 그러나 이 대회를 개최했던 한국비교문학자의 시선에서 보았을 때 이 대회가 우리에게 가져다 준 실익은 얼마나 되는지 궁금하다. 이 대회를 통해 한국비교문학자들은 한국에서 비교문학 연구에 매진할 수 있는 연구적 상황이나 학문후속세대들이 성장할 수 있는 제도적 여건이 여실히 개선되기를 기대했으나, 여전히 그 현실은 크게 달라진 것이 없기 때문이다. 이처럼 외국인의 시선에서는 성공적으로 보이는 대회가 국내학자들에게는 그리 큰 성과를 가져다 주지 못했다면 그 이유는 어디에 있을까. 이에 대한 대답을 찾아, ICLA 2010 서울 세계대회의 명암의 의미를 살펴 보고, 그 자성적 평가를 바탕으로 ‘한국에서 비교문학하기’의 어려움을 극복할 실천적 전략을 모색해, 21세기 한국비교문학이 나아갈 방향을 제시하고자 하는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. 그리고 그 탐구의 결과로, 이 글은 한국의 비교문학이 현재의 위기상황을 극복할 실천적 방안으로서, 문학의 국제적 관계에 바탕을 둔 전통적 비교문학연구방법에 대한 가치를 새로이 인식할 것과, 외국어능력, 특히 영어능력의 함양을 통해 한국비교문학자의 국제경쟁력을 기를 것을 제안한다.

This study retroactively discusses the underlying significance of the internationally approved success of the 19th Congress of the International Comparative Literature Association (ICLA), held in Seoul, Korea, from August 15 to 21, 2010, in order to shed some lights into the future of comparative literature in Korea. For that purpose, an introspective approach is adapted to explore the challenges and the problems that the ICLA 2010 Seoul Congress has exposed to Korean Comparative Literature. As this study offers some critiques on the disciplinary premises upon which the Korean Special Forum of the ICLA 2010 Seoul Congress was organized, it will eventually raise two points of urgency: firstly, the traditional, transnational approaches of comparative literature should reenter the academic arena of Korean comparative literary studies in order to foster the globalization of Korean literature; and secondly, Korean scholars in Comparative Literature should endeavor to acquire a good knowledge of foreign languages, especially of English, for their global scholarly competency.
