This paper investigates the origins, aims, and ideology of the most successful and, arguably, most “extreme” Great Books curriculum, The New Program at St. John`s College (USA). Through an examination of The Program`s distinctive motto Facio liberos ex liberis libris libraque, “By means of books and a balance, I make free citizens from children”-as well as archival materials, official college publications, curricular data from the past 75 years, and writings by its acolytes and detractors-I argue that although popular imagination usually conceives of St. John`s and Classics as kith and kin, fundamentally similar to and sympathetic with one another, the St. John`s New Program, specifically, and Great Books programs, in general, turn out to be the dialectical negation of the science of classical antiquity. Moreover, The Program at St. John`s turns out to be a highly contingent, historically specific endeavor, in direct contradiction of its claims to universality and historical detachment.
