The purpose of this study was to develop a parents-involved group counseling program geared toward preventing smartphone addiction in lower-grade elementary school students and to examine its effectiveness. The subjects in this study were 46 selected students who were in two different second-grade classes in an elementary school. One of the two classes was selected as an experimental group, and the other was selected as a control group. The instrument used in this study was the National information Society Agency`s Smart Media Observer Rating Scale for Infant and Preschooler. The findings of the study were as follows: The experimental group that participated in the parents-involved group counseling program designed to prevent smartphone addiction in lower elementary school graders underwent more significant changes in addiction proneness than the control group that didn`t. Among the subfactors of smartphone addiction, the experimental group also underwent more significant changes than the control group in salience, impulsive/obsessive use, tolerance and interpersonal conflicts. When the writings of the group members and the observation data of the counselor were analyzed, the program was found to have had a positive effect on the prevention of smartphone addiction in the lower elementary school graders as well.
