본고에서는 가와바타 야스나리(川端康成)의 원작소설 『잠자는 미녀(眠れる美女)』(1960~1961)와 2011년에 제작된 호주 영화 줄리아 리 감독의 ‘Sleeping Beauty’(2011)의 대조연구를 통해 원작과 영화의 공통점과 상이점을 찾고, 그것이 의미하는 바가 무엇인지, 그리고 노년의 ‘성(性)’의 모색이 각 작품에 어떻게 드러나고 있는지를 고찰하였다. 가와바타 작품들은 대부분 남성의 시각에서 기술되어 있으며, 『잠자는 미녀』도 에구치(江口)노인이라는 남성이 주인공이다. 그러나 ‘Sleeping Beauty’에서는 여주인공이 젊은 여대생으로 여성의 시각에서 작품 스토리가 전개된다. 이러한 상이점은 노년의 ‘성(性)’을 그리고 수용하는 작품 주제에도 크게 영향을 미치고 있었다. 소설에서는 ‘잠자는 미녀’의 육체의 탐닉을 통해 퇴폐적 욕망을 충족하며 그곳에서 부처를 발견함으로써 죽음의 공포에서 벗어나는 것으로 파악되고 있었다. 그에 대해 ‘Sleeping Beauty’에서는 노쇠에 대한 슬픔과 죽음에 대한 공포가 향락적인 ‘성(性)’적 충족을 통해 형상화되고 있었으며, 노인에게 있어서는 죽음 자체가 구제로 그려져 있었으나 그것을 수용하는 젊은 여대생에게 있어서는 죽음은 공포 그자체로 나타나고 있었다.

This paper is intended as an investigation of similarities and differences between 『Nemureru bijo(眠れる美女)』(Kawabata yasunari(川端康成), Japanese novel, 1960∼ 1961) and ‘Sleeping Beauty’ (Julia Lee, Australian movie, 2011). And I``d like to find the meaning of an old-age sex aspect in 『眠れる美女』and ‘Sleeping Beauty’. kawabata``s literature has been proposed as an angle of a man. And also, the man called Eguchi(江口) is a main character in 『眠れる美女』. But, the female university student describes a story as an angle of a woman in ‘Sleeping Beauty’. These differences influence the theme concerning an old-age sex aspect in the writing. 『眠れる美女』derives a decadent desire through the physical pleasure and gets off scot free from the fear of a death by finding out about Buddha. By comparison, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ materializes the fear of a death about decrepitude through a sex satisfaction. And the old man accepts a death as a relief, but the female university student accepts a death as a fear in itself.
