The 1920s and 1930s, when Virginia Woolf was most active as a writer overlap the time when she was absorbed in reading Marcel Proust’s novel, In Search of Lost Time. Diaries, letters and essays she had left during this time reveal his deep influence on her, intactly. However, her emotions about him at the time, are divided into a dichotomous form. Her admiration and respect for him coexist with her feeling of doubt about herself as a novelist. Reading great writer’s works, Virginia Woolf falls in despair concerning the fact that she, too, feels a desire to write like Proust, but she cannot do like him. In that sense, To the Lighthouse published by Woolf in 1927 symbolically reveals her contradictory emotions about Proust. This novel can be said to be the result of her conscious effort to keep a distance from him. Although To the Lighthouse, like In Search of Lost Time, deals with big common themes, ‘the passage of time’ and ‘self-realization through art,’ the processes in which she develops and reaches them and leads to a conclusion are different from those of Proust. The passage of time has been just abstract numbers to Woolf’s characters, while the destructive force and sense of attrition with the passage of time have been absolute to Proust’s characters. Along with a visit to the lighthouse Mr. Ramsay achieves with children, Lily Briscoe achieves reconciliation by completing Mrs. Ramsay’s portrait in ten years, and the process is completed somewhat abstractly, extemporaneously and miraculously. In contrast, the conclusion of In Search of Lost Time in which Marcel regains his calling as a writer by deciding to write a novel that contains his life is achieved by the mechanism of involuntary memory which is phased and repeated. This study of intertextuality attempts to understand the traces of Woolf’s conscious deviation from Proust by analyzing his influence in To the Lighthouse. In sum, To the Lighthouse is a work that has a special meaning in that it became a great turning point for Woolf in growing up as a writer, finding her own voice under great writer’s influences.
