아드리안 리치는 월트 휘트만과 윌리엄 칼로스 윌리엄즈로 이어지는 미국 민중시 전통에 속한 시인이다. 두 명의 선배시인처럼 리치는 지배 권력과 주류사회의 관심에서 밀려난 주변부 여성들의 삶과 노동자계층의 삶을 미국역사의 일부로 기록하려는 노력을 기울였다. 특히, 중기시집부터 그녀는 초기의 급진적 여성주의 시선에서 벗어나 인간주의 시선을 견지하며, 비-백인 노동자계층, 이민자들, 불법 이주노동자들에게 자행되는 현대 미국자본주의 사회의 야만성을 비판하는 진보주의 지성인의 목소리를 높이기 시작하였다. 이 논문은 그간 미국민중시 전통에서 좀처럼 연결고리가 규명되지 않았던 윌리엄즈와 리치의 영향 관계에 주목하며 리치와 윌리엄즈가 공유했던 진보주의 정치의식이 보여주는 미국적 특성을 살펴보고, 윌리엄즈의 ‘회화 같은 시학’이 리치의 시에서 어떤 식으로 변주되는지를 조명하고자 한다. 특히, 리치가 보여준 융합적 시선이 윌리엄즈가 가난하고 무지한 노동자계층에 대해 보여주었던 브뢰헬풍 풍속화가의 시선과 시적 음화 기법에서 중요한 영향을 받았다는 점을 분석할 것이다. 두 시인의 영향 관계를 조명하고 리치가 평생 헌신적으로 추구하였던 “공동 언어”를 향한 소망이 휘트만의 “대중들 전체”를 향한 소망이나 윌리엄즈의 “공동의 대화”를 향한 소망과 다르지 않은 것이었다는 점을 보여줌으로써, 이 논문은 휘트만에서 윌리엄즈로 그리고 리치로 이어지는 미국문학의 공동체적 전망을 보다 명확하게 드러낼 수 있을 것이다.

Adrienne Rich is one of the American bards who succeeded to the communal vision of Walt Whitman. Just like Whitman, she dedicated herself to recording the lives of common working class people as part of American history. Yet, while developing a unique way of seeing as a Jewish, Lesbian, Feminist American poet, she seems to have re-discovered the value of William Carlos Williams’ Ut Pictura Poesis and his capacity to create a poetic negative. Therefore, this paper contends that Rich, reading later collections of Williams, could have evolved her intial gaze of a camera into a Williams-like communal scopic field, in which both the conscious of a poetic picture and the unconscious of a poetic negative unfold gradually so that they would awaken the reader’s perception and re-construct his/her mind. In order to illuminate how Williams’ Ut Pictura Poesis gets variated in Rich’s poetry, this paper first draws attention to the political stance two poets shared and examines Williams’ technique of creating a poetic negative. Then, it compares Williams’ Pictures from Brueghel, which was actually inspired by Peter Brueghel’s paintings, and Rich’s Necessities of Life and Time’s Power to explore how Rich’s woman-seeing eye is connected to Williams’ ‘American’ way of seeing. By indicating that Rich’s dream of a common language is in the continuation of Williams’ dream of a common conversation, this paper identifies Williams as the so-far missing link that would connect Whitman and Rich in the tradition of American democratic bardism.
