이 글은 대학 글쓰기 교육이 그 실효성과 가치에 대한 비판을 극복하고, 보다 발전적인 방향으로 나아갈 수 있는 이론적 토대를 마련하기 위해 구성되었다. 이를 위해, 먼저 대학 글쓰기 교육에 대해 제기된 다양한 비판의 역사를 검토했다. 이후, 비판을 통해 도출된 주요한 대안적 글쓰기 교육 방안을 살피고, 해당 교육 방안들이 대학 글쓰기 교육 현장에 어떻게 적용될 수 있는지 논의했다. 대학 글쓰기 교육에 대해 제기된 비판으로는 필수 교과로서 글쓰기 강좌를 폐지할 것을 주장한 초기 폐지론 및 글쓰기 전문가로부터 제기된 ‘새로운 폐지론’, 그리고 활동이론에 근거하여 대학 글쓰기 강좌의 활동체계 모순을 비판한 논의를 검토했다. 또한 대안적 글쓰기 교육 방안으로는 국내에서 이미 시도되고 있는 계열별 글쓰기 교육과 WAC 교육, 그리고 미국에서 보편화되고 있는 WAW 교육과 수사학적 장르 인식 교육을 고찰했다. 결과적으로, 이 글은 수사학적 장르 인식 교육의 도입이 필요하다고 보았다. 또한 장기적으로 WAC 교육을 활성화하여, 학생들이 글쓰기 강좌에서 습득한 메타적 인식을 토대로 다양한 WAC 강좌에서의 구체적 장르 교육에 적응하도록 도울 필요가 있음을 주장했다.

The purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical foundation of college writing education to overcome ongoing criticism of its effectiveness and value. For this, this study first reviewed the history of the various criticisms raised against the college writing education and examined several alternative instructional methods. Criticisms about college writing education examined are initial abolitionism, “new abolitionism” that raised from writing experts, and criticism about contradictions of the college writing classroom activity system based on activity theory. This study also consider various alternative approaches to teach writing: disciplinary writing, ‘Wring Across Curriculum(WAC)’, ‘Writing About Writing(WAW)’ and ‘Rhetorical Genre Awareness(RGA)’ instructions. As a result, this study proposed that it is necessary to use a RGA instruction in college writing classroom. In addition, long-term activation of WAC education, argued that the need to help students adapt to the specific training in a variety of genres WAC courses based on a meta-awareness gained from writing courses.
