본 연구에서는 일정한 지역 방언과 표준어와의 접촉의 결과 나타난 표준어화 (standardization)의 양상을 전남 방언에서 진행되고 있는 어휘의 표준어화에 초점을 맞추어 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이와 같은 연구는 100여 년의 역사를 지닌 표준어 정책이 가져온 국어의 변화 가운데 하나로 지역 방언 어휘의 표준어화가 어떠한 양상으로, 또 어느 정도나 진행되었는지에 대한 사회언어학적 접근이 좀 더 활발하게 이루어져 하다는 필요성에 따른 것이다. 방언 접촉의 개념 및 유형, 근대화와 더불어 이루어진 우리의 표준어 정책의 수립으로 인해 야기된 방언의 표준어화에 대한 이해를 전제로, 광주·전남 지역출신 20대 남녀 대학생 135명을 대상으로 이루어진 방언 어휘 110개의 인지 및 사용 양상에 대한 설문 조사 결과 확인된 표준어화 양상을 몇 가지로 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조사 대상 어휘 110개에 대한 인지 정도는 평균 20.6개로 전체 어휘의 18.7%의 낮은 수준에 그쳤다. 결과적으로 조사대상자들은 자신의 부모 세대와는 다르게 90여 개(81.3%)나 되는 방언 어휘들을 거의 인지하지 못하고 있다는 가정이 가능한바, 방언 어휘들에서 일어나고 있는 표준어화의 정도가 매우 높은 수준을 보였다. 둘째, 조사 대상 어휘 가운데 50% 이상의 인지도를 보이는 어휘는 모두 14개로서 전체 어휘의 12.7%에 지나지 않는다. 이와는 달리 20% 이하의 낮은 인지도를 보이는 어휘는 75개로서 68.2%를 차지하며, 이 가운데 조사대상자 100%가 인지하지 못하고 있는 어휘는 12개로서 10.9%를 차지하여 이들 어휘가 젊은 세대에 의해 전혀 인지되지 못하고 있음이 확인되었다. 셋째, 50% 이상의 사용률을 보이는 어휘가 3개의 어휘에 국한되어 있다는 사실 외에 10% 이하의 사용률을 보이는 어휘의 개수가 91개로 82.7%의 비율을 보이며, 이 가운데 사용률 0%인 어휘가 32개나 되어 인지도 100%인 어휘의 2.5배 정도를 차지한다. 해당 어휘를 알고 있더라도 실제로 사용하지 않는 경우가 그만큼 많다는 것을 의미한다.

In this research, the aim was to examine the feature of standardization which appeared in result of contact between a regional dialect and the standard language, in the focus of standardization of vocabularies happening in Jeonnam regional dialect. Such study follows the necessity of more active social linguistic approach about how, and how much regional dialect vocabularies changes as one of the change of Korean which follows the standard language policy which has 100years history. On the assumption of understanding of concept of dialect contact, types, and the relationship between our standard language policy and standardization of dialects which were formed with modernization, the following is categorization of standardizations confirmed in a survey result about cognition and usage of 110 Jeonnam dialect vocabularies of 135 university students in twenties who were born in Gwangju Jeonnam area. First, the cognitive degree of target 110 vocabulary was 20.6 in average, which was 18.7% in total. Resultingly, the students, unlike their parent generation, can not recognize the more than 90 dialect vocabulary(81.3%). It is assumable that the degree of standardization appearing in dialect vocabulary is quite high. Second, the vocabulary which has more than 50% of recognition rate was only 12.7% in total. Wheres the vocabulary which has less than 20% of cognition rate was 75, which is 68.2% in total, and among these 12 were the vocabulary which nobody recognized, 10.9% in total. It is confirmed that the young generation completely don’t recognize these words.
