본고는 <최척전>에 등장하는 주변 인물들의 성격 규명을 통해 거기에 내재된 작가의 창작 의식을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그간 <최척전>에 대한 많은 논의가 있었으나 주변인물의 성격과 연관되는 작가 의식을 본격적으로 고찰한논의는 없었다. 본고는 이점에 주목하여 포로 옥영과 연관되는 돈우, 그리고 유랑인 최척과 연관되는 여유문·주우·늙은 오랑캐·진위경 등의 성격을 분석하였다. <최척전>의 이면에는 임진왜란 때 포로로 끌려갔던 조선인의 파란만장한 삶과 그러한 포로들에 대한 조선의 다층적 시선이 절묘하게 반영되어 있으며 또한 전란으로 고향과 조국을 떠나 동아시아를 유랑하던 민족의 아픈 경험이 내밀하게 형상화 되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 그러한 고통스러운 현실을 가족과 가문, 그리고 민족에 대한 의식의 강화를 통해 극복하고자 한 작가의 인식이 투영되어 있음도 확인하였다. 따라서 <최척전>은 전란 속에서 피어난 보편적 인간애나 따듯한 이웃이라는 동아시아적 가치보다는 가족과 가문, 그리고 민족에 대한 의식을 강화하고 그것을 바탕으로 전란을 극복하고자 하는 작가 의식이 반영된 작품이라 할 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study was to determine consciousness that the author of had in creating that novel by investigating the personalities of characters appeared in the novel. In this sense, this study analyzed a variety of personalities that are found in characters of the novel such as Don Woo, who is associated with war prisoner Ok Young, and Yeo Yu-mun, Ju Woo, an old barbarian and Jin Win-gyeong all of whom Choi Cheok has some things to do with. The novel shows how much people of Joseon who became prisoners of the Joseon-Japan War, that is, Imjinwaeran lived a life full of ups and downs and how much diversely they were viewed by their mother nation. The work also represents in detail pains that were experienced by those who had to leave their home and mother nation and wander around the East Asia due to the war. Furthermore, the novel reflects its author’s intention to overcome and resolve the pains through strengthening the characters’awareness of their family, clan and nation. In conclusion, reflects its’ author’s consciousness that consequences of the war should be overcome through the intensified awareness of family, clan and the nation, rather than humanity as is often developed during wars or East Asian values like neighborhood.
