교외화 현상의 하나로 저밀도·분산·비계획적인 토지 이용을 특징으로 하는 도시 스프롤은 도시문제 그리고 환경문제의 주된 원인으로 지목되고 있다. 이에 따라 도시 스프롤을 측정하려는 시도가 지속적으로 있어 왔다. 그 중 인구밀도만을 사용한 단일지수인 스프롤 지수는 측정이 용이하고 이해하기 쉬워 여러 연구에서 적용되고 있다. 하지만 비지적 발달과 같은 스프롤의 핵심 특성을 담아내는데 한계가 있을 수 있고 인구밀도 측정의 공간스케일, 구획 방식, 밀도구분 임계값 등에 민감할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 가상의 데이터와 경험적 데이터를 사용하여 스프롤 지수가 갖는 특징을 다각도로 평가하고자 하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 인구밀도에서의 변화는 스프롤 지수에 반영되지만 인구 분포 패턴 변화는 감지할 수 없었다. 둘째, 인구밀도 측정의 공간 스케일과 구획 방식 변화에 따라 스프롤 지수는 상당히 달라졌다. 셋째, 고밀도 지역과 저밀도 지역을 구분하는 임계값을 증가시킴에 따라스프롤 지수 또한 증가하였다. 따라서 스프롤 지수를 이용하여 도시 스프롤을 측정할 경우 이러한 점들을 인지하고 그 적용과 해석에서 주의를 기울일 필요가 있다.
As one of suburbanization phenomena, urban sprawl characterized by low density, dispersion and haphazard land use has been pointed out as the main cause of urban and environmental issues. Thus, measuring the urban sprawl has been an abiding research topic in urban studies. The sprawl index as a single indicator using only population density has been applied in a number of studies, because it is easy to understand and measure. However, the sprawl index might not be able to reflect the key characteristics of urban sprawl like leapfrog development and might be sensitive to modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) and the threshold dividing high and low population densities. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of the sprawl index in various aspects such as change in spatial arrangement, scale and zoning effects and change in the density threshold. The main findings of this study are following. First, the sprawl index could reflect the change in population density but could not detect the change in the pattern of population density. Second, the value of sprawl index was sensitive to the changes in spatial scale and zoning system. Third, the sprawl index also increased as the threshold dividing the low and high population density increases. This findings imply that when measuring urban sprawl using the sprawl index, we need to recognize these characteristics and pay attention to the interpretation and application of the index.
