일반적으로 성장은 긍정적 이미지를 가진다. 교육현장에서 ``성장소설``은 청소년기 아이들의 정서를 순화하고 방황을 바로잡아주는 교육적 기능을 하는 것으로 인식되고 있다. 그런데 교육현장에서 성장소설로 다루어지는 작품들에 나타나는 성장의 양상에 부정적인 측면은 없는지 충분한 고려가 이루어지지 않았다고 보인다. 하나는 성장이 가족 개인에 대한 동정에 머무름으로써 세계관의 확장을 저해하고 계급을 고착 시킬 가능성이다. 둘째는 폭력, 외도, 주정과 같은 아버지의 부정적인 측면까지 대물림할 가능성이다. 남아 성장소설이 아버지와의 ‘화해’에 이르는 경우 ‘불쌍한 가장’에 대한 동정이 자기연민과 동일시로 나타나는 경향이 있기 때문이다. 셋째는 어른과 아이의 갈등관계에서 화해가 약자인 아이의 전적인 양보를 통해 이루어진다는 것이다. 아무리 약한어른도 아이와의 관계에서 권력적으로 우위에 있다. 권력을 가진 어른들이 그들의 보호를 받고 있는 아이에게 동정과 화해를 요구하는 것은 비물리적 폭력의 혐의가 짙다. 넷째는 조숙의 부정적 측면을 고려하지 않으면 안 된다는 것이다. 현덕 「나비를 잡는 아버지」, 최나미 「턱수염」, 이순원 「말을 찾아서」, 김소진 「자전거 도둑」을 주 대상으로 위의 측면에 대해 살펴보았다. 본고는 대상으로 한 작품의 작품성을 비판하는 것을 목적으로 하지 않았다. 성장소설이라 일컬어지는 작품들을 교육현장에서 다룰 때 성장의 이면에 있는 부정적 측면에 대해 충분히 고려하여 다각도로 접근해야 할 것이라는 제안을 하고자 한 것임을 명기해둔다.
