내재적 비판은 비판의 규범적 척도를 물화하지 않는다는 점에서 열린비판을 지향한다. 비판의 규범적 척도를 역사과정 외부에 실체화하는 외적비판과 달리, 내재적 비판은 그 척도를 비판 대상인 역사과정 내부에서,즉 사회적 실천을 통해 제도화된 형태로 확인하고자 한다. 이럴 경우 사회이론은 규범적 척도의 잠재력이 사회적 생활세계에서 실현되는 현상뿐 아니라 그것이 훼손되는 현상 또한 진단하고 비판할 수 있게 된다. 비판적 사회이론의 역사에서 내재적 비판은 노동에서 상호작용으로의 비판 패러다임의 전환과 함께 하버마스의 의사소통합리성 모델과 호네트의 인정 모델로 구현되었다. 하버마스는 근대사회의 발전과정을 의사소통합리성의 제도적 구현과 그 훼손으로, 호네트는 인정 원칙의 제도화와 그 손상으로 진단, 비판한다. 그러나 비판의 규범적 척도를 의사소통합리성에 두느냐 인정 원칙에 두느냐의 차이에도 불구하고 그 두 모델은 사회의 발전과정을 규범적 실천이 지닌 긍정적 잠재력의 실현으로 간주한다는 점에서 한 사회의 규범구조의 변동에 주목하는 공통점이 있다. 내재적 사회비판 모델이 의도하는 사회의 진보는 물질적 차원이 아니라 규범적 차원에서 이루어진다.

Immanent critique aims to be an open one in that it does not reify the normative measure of a critique. In contrast to external critique making that measure a substance outside the historical process, it intends to confirm that such a measure is institutionalized through social practices in the historical process which is the object of a critique in itself. And then, a social theory could diagnose and criticize the phenomena that the potentials a normative measure has have been realized, as well as damaged so far in a social lifeworld. With the paradigm shift of social criticism from labor to interaction in the history of critical social theory, immanent critique made a model of communicative rationality in Habermas’ social theory or recognition in Honneth’s one. Habermas diagnoses and criticizes the developmental process of modern society both as the realization of the communicative rationality through social institutions and as its damage, while Honneth both as the institutionalization of the principle of recognition and as its deficit. Both models for immanent critique have the point in common that they pay attention to the movement of the normative structure in a society, regarding social developmental process as the actualization of the positive potentials normative social practices have, in spite of the difference between them, whether communicative rationality or recognition principle is highlighted as the normative measure of a critique. The social progress the model of immanent critique has in mind is made not in the dimension of the material but the normative.
