본고는 제임스 게일이 서울 연동교회 목사로 부임하면서 함께 운영하게 된 경신학교 및 정신여학교의 교과서로 활용하기 위해 편찬한 『유몽천자』, 그 속에 수록된 영미문학작품 5종을 주목했다. 이 영미문학번역물을 통해, 『유몽천자』를 비롯한 게일의 초기 저술속에서 보이는 오리엔탈리즘 혹은 유럽중심주의적 사고가 형성된 원천과 서구=근대성을한국인에게 기입하고자 한 그의 실천, 그 속에 내재된 복합적인 현상의 문제를 규명하고자했다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 다음과 같은 두 가지 문제를 살폈다. 첫째, 『유몽천자』소재 영미문학번역물이 배치되는 그 얼개, 교과서 전체가 표상하는 서구적 지식구조를 살폈다.『유몽천자』의 서구적 지식구조가 제시하는 세계상은 ‘우주에서 바라본 지구’로 형상화된다. 더불어 이 세계를 구성하는 대륙과 이 속에서 살아가는 인종들의특성, 삶의 양식을 보여준다. 이는 콜럼버스의 아메리카 발견 이후 구축된 근대의 세계상이었다. 게일 역시도 이 세계를 역사적으로 체험한 것은 아니었다. 이는 교과서와 문학작품에관한 독서체험을 통해 주어진 자명한 것으로 내면화된 지식이었다. 둘째, 서구적 지식을 한국어로 번역한다는 실천 속 중심과 주변 사이의 상호작용과 문화번역의 문제를 고찰했다. 즉, 『유몽천자』속 영미문학에 대한 번역양상 그리고 당시 국한문체의 번역지평에 관해 살폈다. 게일의 영미문학작품의 번역실천은 근대지식의 전파란 측면에서 한정할 수 없는 주변부 번역의 가능성이 담겨져 있었다. 물론 『유몽천자』 속 영미문학은사건전개와 요지를 간추려 번역한 ‘경개역’이란 특징을 지닌 것이었다. 그렇지만 이러한 ‘원전에 대한 축역’은 편찬자의 번역전략이었으며, 당시 게일이 인식한 한국인이 수용할 수 있는 ‘한국어’, ‘한국문학’이란 지평에서 이뤄진 실천이었다.

This paper examines five English literary works in Yumongchunja. The book was compiled by J. S. Gale in order to use it as the textbook at Kyungshin School and Chungshin Girls` School that he managed after he started for his new post as a minister at Youndong Presbyterian Church. Especially, the paper inquires into the implicit problem of Gale`s translation practices that inscribed Eurocentric or Oriental knowledge on Korean people in his early writings including Yumongchunja. For this, the paper studies the following two issues. First, this study shows that the view of the world represented in Yumongchunja is Eurocentric or Oriental in some way, looking into the selective arrangement of five English literary works and Western knowledge structure represented in the book. That is, the text implicitly displays the perspective that argued that the superior white race must civilize the inferior colored races in the name of Christianization and civilization. Second, this paper examines the interaction and cultural translation between western and non-western world from the viewpoint of center-periphery, analyzing the practices that translated western knowledge in Korean for compiling Yumongchunja. This examination reveals that the practice of translation includes the possibility of translation in peripheral world in terms of spreading western knowledge, and underlines that the practice must secure the viewpoint of considering Korean people and Korean literature.
