본 연구의 목적은 일본 종합상사의 발전 과정을 분석하고 그에 따라 한국 종합상사에 대한 시사점을 찾는 것이다. 본 연구는 일본 종합상사의 역사적 발전 과정을 3단계, 즉 제1단계(1876-1945), 제2단계(1946-1979), 제3단계(1980-오늘날)로 구분하고, 각 단계에서의 기업전략 상황을 살펴보았다. 분석 결과, 제1단계 및 제2단계에서는 그 기업들은 다각화 및 글로벌 전략 축으로 본격적으로 사업을 확대해 갔으며 제조 및 서비스 분야에도 부분적으로 진출한 것으로 규명되었다. 그리고 제3단계에서는 제조 및 서비스 분야에도 적극 진출해, 오늘날 이들은 ``종합적 사업 투자 및 운영 회사``로 된 것으로 규명되었다. 이론적 분석에서는 제품별 다각화 및 글로벌 확장은 범위의 경제를 활용하는 행동으로 설명될 수 있고, 제조 및 서비스 분야에 대한 수직통합은 역량 확보 및 교섭력 확대를 위한 활동으로 설명될 수 있다. 한국 종합상사에 대한 시사점에 관해서는 다양한 글로벌 활동으로의 확장, 장기적 관점의 해외자원 개발 투자, 제조 및 서비스 분야에 대한 투자 등이 제시 되었다.

The purposes of this paper are to analyze the development process of Japanese general trading companies and to draw some implications for Korean general trading companies. This study classified the historical development process of Japanese general trading companies into three stages, the first stage(1876-1945), the second stage(1946- 1979), and the third stage(1980-today) and reviewed corporate strategy situations at each stage. From the analysis, it is found that the companies expanded their businesses substantially along the diversification and global strategies and partially entered into production and service sectors in the first and second stages. It is also found that they entered vigorously into production and service sectors in the third stage and now became ‘general business investment and operating companies.’ In theoretical analysis, the product diversification and global expansion can be explained as behaviors of utilizing economy of scope, and vertical integration into production and service sectors can be explained as activities of exploring competencies and increasing bargaining powers. As to the implications for Korean general trading companies, expansion into various global activities, long-term perspective investment on foreign natural resource development, and investment into production and service sectors were suggested.
