이 연구의 목적은 혼잣말 종결어미들이 공통적으로 어떠한 특성을 보이는지 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본고에서는 혼잣말 종결어미를 ‘청자를 고려하지 않은 채 혼자서 하는 말에 주로 쓰이는 종결어미’로 정의하고 총 23개의 혼잣말 종결어미 목록을 제시하였다. 본고에서 밝힌 혼잣말 종결어미의 특성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 혼잣말은 화자가 화자 자신을 청자로 상정한 발화라는 점에서 혼잣말 종결어미의 화계는 ‘안 높임(또는 낮춤)’으로 설정할 수 있다. 혼잣말 종결어미는 ‘-요’ 결합 여부에 따라 안 높임(또는 낮춤) 등급인 해라체와 해체로 나뉘는데, 해체 혼잣말 종결어미에 ‘-요’가 결합되어 상향 억양으로 실현되면 질문의 효력이 발생한다. 둘째, 혼잣말 종결어미는 감탄, 자문, 결심, 후회, 불평, 추측, 의심 등의 다양한 의미 기능을 할 수 있다. 또한 혼잣말 종결어미는 화자가 어려운 부탁을 하거나 불평, 불만을 넌지시 전달하고자 할 때 언어 책략으로 이용하는 독특한 화행적 특성을 보인다. 셋째, 혼잣말 종결어미는 2인칭 대명사와 함께 쓰일 수 없고 ‘싶다, 하다, 보다’ 구문과 같은 이른바 SEA 구문과 통합할 수 있다는 통사적 특성을 보인다. 본고에서는 ‘싶다, 하다, 보다’ 구문과 결합하는 종결어미는 대체로 혼잣말 종결어미임을 확인하였다. 진정한 SEA 구문은 ‘보다’ 구문이고, ‘싶다’ 구문과 ‘하다’ 구문은 간접 인용 구문으로 볼 수 있다. ‘보다’ 구문 이외의 SEA 구문으로는 ‘모르다’ 구문을 추가할 수 있다.

This study intends to examine the common characteristics of the private speech sentence-final endings. Our findings are as follows. First, the speech level of the private speech sentential-final endings can be set up as low-level because the private speech is a utterance that the speaker regards oneself as a hearer. The private speech sentential-final endings are divided into hay-la style and hay style, according to whether or not they can be combined with ‘-yo’. If the private speech sentential-final endings of hay style are combined with ‘-yo’ and realized as rising tone, they have the effect of interrogative. Second, the private speech sentence-final endings have various semantic functions such as exclamation, self-question, resolution, regret, complaint, supposition, suspicion, etc. And the private speech sentence-final endings can be used as linguistic strategies when a speaker wants to ask a big favor or express grumbles and dissatisfaction by hints to a hearer. Third, the private speech sentence-final endings can’t co-occur with a 2nd person pronoun and can combine with SEA(sentence ending auxiliary) constructions, which is the syntactic properties of the private speech sentence-final endings. Also the real SEA construction is the ‘po-ta’ construction, the ‘siph-ta’ construction and ‘ha-ta’ construction are a indirect quotation construction. In addition to the ‘po-ta’ construction, we can accept the ‘mo-lu-ta’ construction as a SEA construction.
