이 글은 현대 한국어의 성립 과정을 밝히기 위한 기초 작업의 하나로 후기 근대 국어시기와 현대 한국어 사이에 ‘현대 한국어 성립기’를 설정할 필요성이 있음과, ‘현대 한국어 성립기’를 태동기, 확립기, 안정기의 세 시기로 하위 구분할 것을 제안하고, 각 시기의 문체 상의 특성을 밝혀 제안의 근거로 삼는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위한 논의의 내용은 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 1장에서는 개항 이후 약 90년 사이에 일어난 언어문화사적 변혁이 지니는 의의를 정리하고 그를 바탕으로 현대 한국어 성립기를 설정할 필요성이 있음을 논하였고, 2장에서는 문체의 변화를 검토하는 데에 서사방식(書寫方式)과 사용역(使用域)의 두 가지를 검토의 축으로 삼을 필요가 있음을 보였다. 3장에서는 후기 근대 국어 시기와 현대 한국어 태동기를 구분해 주는 문체 특성으로 ① 한글의 위상 변화와 한글 사용의 확산, ② 다양한 유형의 국한혼용문 사용, ③ 순한글 텍스트와 국한혼용문 텍스트의 공존 및 병존, ④한글과 한자 병기 방식의 등장이라는 네 가지를 들어 정리하였고, 4장에서는 태동기와 확립기를 구분해 주는 문체 특성으로 ① 한글 및 한자 병기 방식의 확산, ② 현대적 국한 혼용문체의 등장이라는 두 가지를 확인하였다.

This paper aims to suggest the needs for ‘Setting up stage of Modern Korean’ and to subdivide the era into three stages, namely ‘beginning period’, ‘settling period’ ‘stabilizing period’, and show the linguistic, stylistic evidences for the suggestions. The discussions in this paper may be summurized as follows. In chapter 1, based on the linguistic-cultural revolutions in this period, the author argued that there are necessities for the term to distinguish this period from the traditional ‘Late Modern Korean(from 17th century to 19th century)’ and ‘Modern Korean(from 1960 up to now)’ and to subdivde this period. In chapter 2, the author proposed two axises for the study of the linguistic styles of the period, ways of transcriptions and register. In chapter 3, the author showed the stylistic charicteristics in ‘beginning period’. ① Change of the status of Hangul and spreading of the use of Hangul in various register ② The use of various kinds of Mix-scripts ③ Co-existence and parallel existence of the texts in Pure Hangul texts and Mixed-scripts ④ The appearence of the texts which shows co-use of Hangul and Chinese characters. In chapter 4, the author showed the stylistic charicteristics in ‘settling period’. ① The spreading of co-use methods of Hangul and Chinese characters ② The appearence of Morean Mixed-scripts texts which differ from the Mixed-scripts in ‘beginning period’.
