『이계룡전』은 유일본으로서 ‘고소설과의 연속성이 두드러진 신작 구소설’이다. 구도의 측면에서 볼 때 『이계룡전』은 뚜렷한 특징을 지닌다. 효행 범주를 아주 크게 설정하면서도 충행 범주는 아주 작게 설정함으로써 ‘大孝小忠’ 구도를 형성한다는 점이 그것이다. 작자는 대효소충 구도를 구체화하기 위해 ‘인물의 욕망’과 ‘사건의 전개’에 주안점을 둔다. 인물의 욕망은 ‘절대효 구현의 욕망’으로 나타나고, 사건의 전개는 ‘누적과 비약’으로 나타난다. 구체화 방법을 통해 절대효의 위상을 높이고자 하는 까닭은 절대효의 기능을 강화하기 위함이다. 절대효는 과연 어떤 기능을 하는가? 효행 주체를 ‘감정 없는 인간’으로 만들 뿐만 아니라 개화기의 물질적 욕망을 배척하는 기능을 한다. 이렇게 볼 때, 물질적 차원에 대한 정신적 차원의 대응이 개화기를 사는 작자의 해결방법이라고 할 수 있다.

Lee Gye-ryong Jeon as the only version is “a new work ancient novel showing prominent continuity with old Korean novels.” As for composition, the novel has a well-defined feature: it forms a composition of “great filial duty and small loyalty” setting up large scope of filial behaviors and small scope of loyal behaviors. Its author focuses on “desires of characters” and “development of events” in order to materialize the composition. The desires of characters are shown as “the desires for realizing absolute filial duty,” while the development of events are shown in “the accumulation and jump.” The novel attempts to raise status of the absolute filial duty via materialization in order to reinforce functions of the absolute filial duty. Then, what functions do absolute filial duty perform have? It not only makes the main agents of filial behaviors “emotionless persons” but excludes material desires in the time of enlightenment of Korea. In this context, the author may suggest facing the material levels with the mental levels as a solution for living in the enlightenment time.
