이 논문은 ‘문장 확대’가 ‘구조-기능-장르 및 이데올로기’의 층위에 존재하는 다층적 현상임을 규명함으로써 문장 확대 교육 내용을 다층적 차원에서 구축하기 위한 이론적 기반을 마련하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그간의 문장 확대 교육 내용은 주로 구조 층위에 국한되어 있었고 최근 기능 층위까지 확대되고 있으나 여전히 교육 내용은 불분명하며, 사회적 실천 행위 층위에서의 교육 내용이 다루어지고 있지 않다는 점에서 문제적이라 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 체계기능 언어학과 정보 구조 이론을 바탕으로 기능 층위의 문장 확대에 대해 논의하고, 사회적 실천 행위로서의 장르 개념을 바탕으로 장르 층위의 문장 확대에 대해, 비판적 담화 분석의 관점에서 이데올로기 층위의 문장 확대에 대해 논의하였다. 이를 바탕으로 ‘문장 확대’가 문장 내부의 구조 분석 층위에 한정되는 것이 아니라 기능 층위, 장르 및 이데올로기 층위에까지 관여하는 문법적 자원임을 인식할 수 있도록 교육하기 위해서는 ‘문장 확대’의 다층성을 규명하기 위한 기반 연구가 지속적으로 이어져야 함을 제언하였다.

The purpose of this study is to establish a theoretical basis for multilayered sentence-extension education by investigating the ‘structurefunction- genre and ideology’ layers of sentence-extension. Sentenceextension education at present is problematic because it is limited to the structure layer and it is obscure on the function layer. Moreover on thegenre and ideology layers no educational content exists. We therefore focus first on sentence-extension education for the function layer from the viewpoints of systematic functional linguistics and theory of information structure. Then we discuss the genre and ideology layers from the viewpoints of genre as a social practice and critical discourse analysis. Last, we suggest that further study on and description of these phenomena should be done in order to enrich the content of multilayered sentence-extension education.
