이 글의 핵심 주제는 초중고등학교 국어교과의 정체성 탐색이다.이를 위해,미래사회를 조망해 보고,과거 국어교과의 수업 내용과 방법을 비판적으로 회고해 보았다.그런 후 국어교과의 정체성을 찾아보았다.정체성 확립을 위한 미래지향적 교육과제도 제안하였다.첫째,이 글에서는 미래사회의 모습을 다음 다섯가지로 정리하였다：(1)지식정보중심 사회;(2)창의중심 사회;(3)인간중심 사회;(4)실용중심 사회;(5)미디어중심 사회.이런 미래사회 모습은 학교의 모든교과,그 중에서 특히 국어교과의 지향 목표가 되어야 할 것이다.둘째,과거 국어수업을 두 가지로 비판하였다：(1)문법과 문학 지식중심의 수업 내용;(2)교사가 교과서 글을 한 줄씩 읽어가며 설명하는 수업 방법.이런 수업에서 학생들은 교사의 말을 받아 적고,적은 것을 암기만 하였던 것이다.셋째,다음 여섯 교육자료를 근거로 국어교과의 정체성을 탐색하였다：(1)학생지도보다는 내용전달에 치중하는 수업 형태;(2)정체성 혼란을 보이는 과거 국어과 교육과정;(3)타교과와 비교해 본 국어교과의 수업 시수;(4)국어 교과서의 잘못된 편찬;(5)최악을 보이는 국어과 평가;(6)그리고 자국어 교육에서 선진을 보이는 외국의 교육과정.이상의 자료 분석으로 얻은 최종 결론은,국어교과는 학생들의 언어사용신장을 목표로 삼아야 하고,교과서와 수업과 평가도 모두 이 언어사용의 신장에 맞추어져야 한다는 것이다.마지막으로 이 글에서는 학생들의 언어사용 신장이라는 교과의 정체성을 확립하기 위한 교육적 과제로 일곱 가지를 제안하였다.

The main theme of this article is to search the identity of Korean Language and Literature subject(‘Korean Subject’) in elementary-middle-high schools. For this purpose, the article firstly looked into the characteristics of future society we are anticipating at this moment. These are ① knowledge/information(-based society); ②creativity; ③individual, not group/ rganization; ④pragmatic; ⑤media. Secondly, the article retrospectively and introspectively criticised the past Korean Subject in light of content and method. The Korean Subject has extremely focused on the teaching of theory/history of Korean grammar and literature. Thirdly, from the analyses of six educational materials, the identity of Korean Subject is extracted. The materials analyzed are ①the content and method of classroom teaching; ②the past curriculums; ③the teaching time in compared with other subjects; ④ textbook; ⑤test and evaluation; ⑥the teaching of national language subject of other advanced nations. Lastly, this article suggested several educational tasks that should be focus on in the future to enhance the identity of the Korean Subject.
