신소설의 주요작품이 발표되던 시기는 조선이 식민지로 전락한 시기와 맞물린다. 신소설 작가들이 당대를 어떻게 인식했으며,작품 속에 어떻게 수용했는지 살필 필요가 있다.이를 위해 이인직 소설의 출발점이자 정치와 소설의 관계에 가장 완미한 균형 감각을 지닌 작품으로 평가되고 있는 .혈의 누 를 분석했다. 출생 이후 관비유학생으로 도일할 때까지 이인직의 생애에 대해 밝혀진 바가 거의 없다.그런 이인직이 都新聞 에 조선을 폄하하는 기사를 싣고,러일전쟁에 일본군 통역관으로 종군하고,친일성향의 혈의 누 를 발표하고,한일합방의 막후 교섭자로 암약했던 것이다.그의 친일의 동인은 무엇인가? 이를 위해 필자는 20세기 초 일본의 실상을 추정해 볼 수 있는 19세기 후반의 기록물과 그에 대한연구에 주목했다.그리고 일본이 세계사 무대에 등장하는 영일동맹과 러일전쟁에 대한 연구에 주목했다.또한 명치 정부의 대 조선정책인 정한론과 그것의 변종인 ‘조선보호론’에 주목했다.
