이 연구는 세월호 참사 보도에 대한 독자들의 인식과 신문의 보도기사에 나타난 이슈 프레임을 비교 연구한 것이다. 설문 조사와 개념도 연구법을 통해 세월호 참사 보도에 대한 독자들의 인식 구조와 그 바탕이 되는 주요 독자 프레임을 이슈에 대한 요소 현저성을 통해 조사하고 이를 바탕으로 「서울신문」, 「조선일보」, 「한겨레」에 게재된 세월호 참사 관련 뉴스보 도들의 구조를 분석했다. 분석을 통해 규명하고자 했던 연구 문제는 1) 세월호 사건 보도에 대한 독자들의 프레임 구조, 2) 세월호 사건 보도와 관련하여 기사에 나타난 프레임의 구조,3) 세월호 사건 보도의 매체 프레임과 독자 프레임의 차이 등이었다. 분석 결과, 독자들은 9가지의 주요 프레임을 통해 세월호 참사를 인식하고 있었으며 그 중에서도 ‘재난의 원인 분석과 재발 방지 대책’을 가장 중요하게 인식하고 있었다. 반면 매체 프레임의 구조에서는 ‘정부와 사회의 반응과 대응’이 가장 높은 현저성을 보였다. 또한 매체 프레임의 구조는 3개 신문이모두 유사한 패턴을 보였다. 연구 결과, 세월호 참사 보도는 독자들의 프레임과는 달리 재난의 원인 분석과 재발 방지보다는 정부와 사회의 반응과 대응에 초점을 둔 보도들이 많았음을 보여주고 있다. 이는 세월호 참사에 대한 보도가 독자들의 인식과 괴리가 있음을 보여주고 있을 뿐 아니라 일반적인 재난 보도의 형태에서도 벗어나 있음을 시사하고 있다.

The current study investigated the media frames and the audience frames concerning Seweolho disaster to answer three major questions: 1) What are the audience frames of Sewolho disaster? 2) What are the media frames of Sewolho disaster? 3) What are the differences between media frames and audience frames concerning Sewolho disaster? Using surveys and concept mapping technique, this study examined the perception of Seweolho disaster among the audiences and the news reports in three major newspapers: Seoul Daily, Chosun Ilbo, and the Hankyoreh. The results showed that among the major 9 frames with which the audiences were interpreting Sewolho disaster, "cause and prevention" was the most salient among audience frames while "the reaction of the government and the public" was the most salient among the media frames.
