이번 연구의 목적은 선행연구, 즉 「리투아니아 근대문학의 형성에 관한 연구」에서 충분하게 다룰 수 없었던 문학의 ‘지역성’을 중심으로, 소위 ‘소(小)리투아니아’로 일컬었던 동(東)프로이센 지역 내의 문화적 역학관계와 주요 문인들의 활동과 문화수호가 어떻게 이루어졌는지를 진단하는 데 있다. 리투아니아는 중세 이후, 긴 역사를 거치는 동안 국토의 경계는 수차례 걸쳐 변경을 거듭하였다. 그러나 영토가 자주 변화하는 동안에도 불구하고, 소(小)리투아니아의 문화적 영향은 계속되었다. 그만큼 현재 리투아니아 공화국의 공적인 영토를 벗어나서도리투아니아 문화가 형성되고, 동시에 영향을 미쳤던 곳은 적지 않다. 다른 한편으로 이러한 광범위한 리투아니아 문학의 지역성을 고찰하는 문제는 결코 쉬운일이 아니므로, 그 범위를 축소하여 사회 및 환경적 관점에서 접근하고자 한다. 그러나 시기적으로 보면, 앞선 연구에서는 리투아니아 근대문학의 형성이 제 모습을 드러낸 19세기 초반과 중반에 활동한 작가와 작품을 중심으로 개괄하였다. 반면, 여기서는 리투아니아어로 문화 및 문학 활동이 시작되는 16세기부터 18세기에 걸쳐 주요 문인들의 리투아니아어 저술과 출판, 그리고 ‘문화수호’라는 특이한 현상을 주로 다루었다. 이로써 19세기 ‘리투아니아의 문화’라는 포괄적 의미를 아우르는 근대문학이 형성되는 토대와 주요 요인에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 나아가 리투아니아 근대문학이 형성되는 과정에서의 지역성은, 대부분의 리투아니아인들이 거주하고 있는 본토 리투아니아와 ‘폴란드-리투아니아 연합국’의 영토에 한정하지 않았지만, 리투아니아가 점령하거나 정치적 영향력을 미치지 않은 동(東)프로이센에서 이루어졌음을 알 수 있었다.

This paper is a continuous research based on the preceding theme, "A Study on the Formation of Lithuanian Modern Literature", with a collaboration by the same researchers mentioned above and consequent concerns on how the influence of East Prussia (Ostpreussen) was interpreted by the Lithuanian modern literature at the threshold of 16th and 18th centuries. Moreover, this paper has attempted to make a clearer conceptualization about locality of Lithuania Minor in East Prussia, which shows a number of mutual relationships in comparison with the neighboring countries, i.e. in terms of the cultural pluralism, the multilingual atmosphere, the geographical boundaries, and production of Lithuanian culture as well as publication of Lithuanian books. The Grand Duchy of Lithuanian had widely expanded its territory from Baltic Sea to Black Sea at the 15th century, and then it became a powerful vassal state of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth established in the southern region of Latvia. On the other hand, Lithuania Minor in East Prussia at that time was characterized mostly by German culture which was developed by Baltic Germans who lived in the region since the establishment of Livonia (Livland), and also previous German Order (Ordo Teutonicus). For these reasons, the culture of upper class was composed by East Prussian and Baltic Germans. According to this article, we have intended to introduce fundamental facts regarding the locality of East Prussia and Lithuania Minor, studies of the culture and history of Lithuania Minor, cultural activity of Lithuanian language in Lithuania Minor, and protection and succession of Lithuanian culture. Among these chapters, we have focused on the famous people like Abraomas Kulvietis, Stanislovas Rapolionis and Martynas Mazvydas in the field of literary works and publications, followed by Kristijonas Donelaitis and Liudvikas Gediminas in the field of the beginning of Lithuanian modern literature. In conclusion, we want to get a new understanding of Lithuanian literature from the historical and cultural background to the influence of East Prussia on the constitution of Lithuanian literature in Korea.
