『갈리시아 여인 마리-에르난데스』는 17세기 스페인 극작가 띠르소 데 몰리나의 대표적 희극작품으로 포르투갈에 인접한 갈리시아의 산악지역을 배경으로 포르투갈의 왕실을 둘러싼반역과 음모, 그리고 주인공들의 로맨스가 흥미롭게 전개되는 이국적 분위기의 궁중환상희극이다. 이 연극에서 띠르소는 당시의 암울한 현실을 초월하여 자신의 운명을 스스로 결정하고 이를 위해 주도적으로 노력해나가는 이상적인 여성상을 꿈꾸었는데, 이 점이 바로 띠르소와 그의 연극 『갈리시아 여인 마리-에르난데스』가 지닌 근대성이다. 당시 스페인사회의 서민 여성들은 계층화된 신분제도와 남성중심주의에 짓눌려 숨조차 제대로 쉬지 못한 삶을 연명할 수밖에 없었다. 이러한 그녀들이었기에, 고귀한 신분의 남성과의 결혼이야말로 그녀들을 참담한 삶으로부터 건져내줄 수 있는 유일한 방법이었던 것이다. 그래서 그녀들은 힘겹고 억압받는 일상 속에서 ‘백마 탄 왕자님’을 갈망하는 신데렐라적 환상을 지닐 수밖에 없었던 것이다. 이 신데렐라적 환상은 오늘날에 이르러 많은 사람들에 의해 신데렐라 콤플렉스라고 지칭되며 진정한 자아실현을 위해 여성들이 극복해야 할 대상으로 간주되고 있다. 그런데 흥미롭게도 띠르소 역시 『갈리시아 여인 마리-에르난데스』을 통해서 당시의 서민 여성들이 꿈꾸었던 신데렐라적 환상과 정반대의 방향으로 향하는 여성을 주인공으로 설정하고 있다. 이 연극에서 포르투갈에서 반역자로 몰린 젊은 백작 알바로는 마리아의 산속마을로 도망와 목동으로 변장하여 마리아와 사랑에 빠지지만 그의 옛 애인 베아뜨리스 후작이 나타나자마리아를 버리고 그녀와 함께 몬떼레이 성으로 가버린다. 그러나 마리아는 이에 굴하지 않고 잃어버린 사랑과 명예를 찾기 위해 자신이 지닌 용기와 현명함 그리고 남자를 능가하는 전사적 기질을 주도적으로 발휘하여 혼자의 힘으로 다시 사랑과 명예를 되찾는다. 신데렐라적 환상이 젊은 서민 여성들의 정신적 위안거리가 되던 그 먼 시절에 이미 띠르소는 그 신데렐라적 환상을 초월하는 이상적인 여성의 이미지를 여주인공 마리아를 통해 묘사하였던 것이다. 여성의 주체성 실현이라는 주제에 있어서 실로 시대를 앞서간 선구자적인 혜안을 지닌 극작가와 그의 탁월한 극작품이라 아니할 수 없다.

La gallega Mari-Hernandez is the representative comedy of Tirso de Molina, the spanish playwright in 17th century. It is the fantasy comedy to describe treasons and conspiracies around the court in Portugal and to reveal the main character’s romance in interesting and exotic manners. For this act, Tirso dreamed for the ideal women image of deciding own destiny and trying to achieve such destiny. Such images can tell the writer and this act has such modernity. At that time, the ordinary Spanish women were almost suffocated by the status system and male-oriented society. For those, the marriage with novel man was the only way to get out of such miserable life. Therefore, the women in the harship had to have the illusion of Cinderella desiring the prince charming. Such illusion of Cinderella is called as Cinderella Complex nowadays and the complex is considered as the object that every women has to overcome to realize the self-actualization. The interesting thing is, however, in La gallega Mari-Hernandez, Tirso was set the women of directing opposite way of women’s ideal in such time period as the main character. The young count alvaro, driven as the traitor in Portugal and disguised as shepherd boy, had fallen into love with Maria, however, he dumped her and moved to Monterey castle with his old flame, the marquis Beatriz. Maria had not given up for such betrayal, however, got back her love and honor with her own power by exhibiting her brave, wisdom, and warrior-like disposition. Tirso tried to describe the ideal women’s image which surpasses the illusion of Cinderella in the era of such illusion dominated the ordinary women’s mind. The playwright should be considered as the pioneer who had the insight of all-time, therefore, his work should be an marvelous masterpiece.
