The purpose of this study is to understand conflict conversations between the youth generation and the old-age generation through an analysis of TV dramas. Intergenerational conflict, the natural and inevitable phenomenon of disharmony in thought, value systems, or behavior, can be expressed verbally or non-verbally. When expressed through utterances of dissatisfaction, the result is a conflict conversation. This study focuses on the youth generation``s response utterances, which is perceived as impolite by the old-age generation. These expressions of dispreferred response utterances that cause intergenerational conflicts lead to mutual loss of face and exert a negative influence on the relationship between both generations; these expressions are not used spontaneously but strategically, out of a need to emerge the victor from the confrontation. Such research into the structures and strategies of verbal conflict can be useful in illuminating the problems and verbal processes inherent in the verbal conflicts that arise so often in daily life.
