우리 시대 하나의 문화적 사건으로서 <아름다운 이야기할머니> 사업은 2009년 대구경북지역에서 시작되어 현재 1,750여명의 이야기할머니가 활동하는 전국적인 문화현상이 되었다. 하지만 문화체육관광부의 지원과 한국국학진흥원의 주관으로 일구어온 이야기할머니 사업은 그 의의와 함께 한계점도 드러나고 있는 상황이기에, 구체적인 현장 참여관찰 조사를 통해 바람직한 개선방안을 찾아보고자 하였다. 특히 이야기 구연 자체만으로 구성되어 있는 현재의 구조를 개선하여 지역문화유산과 연계한 지역화를 이루어나갈 필요가 있다. 이 글에서는 이야기할머니 사업을 분석하기 위해 크게 세 가지 요소를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 첫째, 이야기의 선정과 활용양상, 둘째, 이야기할머니의 선정과 활용양상, 셋째, 이야기판의 구성과 활용양상 등이다. 이 세 가지 요소는 이야기할머니 사업의 의의와 성과를 분석하는 데에도 사용되는 분석틀이고 그 한계점을 도출하는 데에도 활용될 뿐만 아니라, 그 대안 모색에서도 동일하게 적용되는 요소이다. 이 세 가지 구성요소를 일관되게 적용함으로써 이야기할머니 사업의 의의와 한계, 대안 등이 보다 명확하게 드러날 것으로 판단한다. 지금까지 이야기할머니 사업이 중앙부처와 위탁기관 중심으로 우리 이야기문화의 보편적인 성격과 일반화를 추구해왔다면, 이제는 각 지역의 로컬리티와 고유성을 발견하고 지역화하는 매개체로서 이야기문화를 만들어가야 할 것이다. 따라서 각 지역 이야기의 조사와 연구, 가공 및 콘텐츠화 등과 함께 이야기할머니의 발굴, 다양한 방식의 구연 방법과 향유 방안이 모색되어야 할 것이며, 각 지역의 문화유산과 연계 활용해 나감으로써 명실 공히 이야기문화를 제대로 꽃피워나가고 지역문화의 새로운 질적 발전을 도모해야 할 것이다.

A purpose of this article is to recognize importance of traditional story culture, and to find restoration method of an ordinary storytelling culture which has been weakened by the dissolving of community and development of modern digital culture. In this article, it was collected to the three cases that performing fields of 'beautiful storytelling grandmother'. An aspect of modern story culture as a section of education is need to recognize the revitalization of story culture. The traditional oral literature stories as a main-body of story culture have been disappeared out the aspects of performance and transmission in ordinary life. The storytelling grandmother who are remarked in this article, is a community that had a contents of a beautiful storytelling grandmother course supported by 'Korean Studies Advancement Center' and 'the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism'. Conclusionally, the project of 'beautiful storytelling grandmother' is also meaningful to improve social role and status of the elderly who are alienated from the center of culture as a responsible class of traditional culture. Storytelling to children of next generation by old ladies has a meaning of communication between generations and translation of period as a practice of ecological children education of our ancestors in the past. Storytelling by a beautiful storytelling grandmother is delivered to children by internalizing their life in the story. Our childhood generation who grow with listening to traditional stories could be a new storytellers of new generation that make traditional storytelling culture to ordinary culture. Lastly, the project of 'beautiful storytelling grandmother' need to use a local cultural heritages spontaneously.
