《坤殿御筆》은 정조의 정비인 효의왕후(孝懿王后) 김씨가 《사기》 <만석군전>과《신당서》 <곽자의전>의 번역본을 대본으로 직접 글씨를 쓴 책이다. 효의왕후는 사촌인 김기후(金基厚)가 왕후의 친필을 얻어 가보로 삼고 싶다는 청을 받아들여 조카인 김종선(金宗善)에게 <만석군전>과 <곽자의전>을 번역하게 했고, 이 번역본을 대본으로 1794년(정조 18년)에 글씨 쓰기를 마쳤다. 여기에 효의왕후의 발문과 김기후의 지문을 붙이고 아름답게 장황하여 《곤전어필》을 완성했다. 효의왕후는 자신이 처한 정치적 상황을 타개할 방책으로 겸손과 인내를 선택했다. 그리고 그러한 선택을 친정 가문에 보여주기 위해 <만석군전>과 <곽자의전>을 선택하여 필사했다. 그러나 이러한 선택은 단지 겸손과 인내를 강조할 뿐만 아니라 그를 통한 가문의 영달을 제시한다는 점에서 의미심장하다. 《곤전어필》은 18세기 지식인의 한글사용이라는 측면에서도 살펴 볼 수 있다. 사회적, 문화적으로 한글을 수준 낮은 문자라고 생각하거나 여성들은 아무리 존귀하더라도 한글만 사용해야 한다고 통념이 있었다. 그러나 이러한 통념과는 달리 한글은 남성 지식인 다수에게 중요한 쓸모를 가지고 있어 자연스레 익히게 되는 글자였으며 실제 사용에 있어서도 격이 낮은 곳에서만 쓰이는 것도 아니었다. 이러한 모순적 한글 사용은 19세기 말 국한문 혼용을 통해 모순을 해소하게 되며 《곤전어필》은 이러한 한글에 대한 인식의 전환과 사용 확대의 모습을 보여주고 있다.

Gonjeoneopil(坤殿御筆) is a handwriting book that Queen Hyoui(孝懿王后), who was the queen of Jeongjo, King of Joseon, directly transcribed in 1794. She transcribed it by accepting her cousin``s request to receive queen``s own handwriting. To write the letters, the queen asked her nephew, Kim Jongseon, to translate two books. Manseokgunjeon among Chinese history and Gwakjaeuijeon among became the script of translation. Gonjeoneopil was completed by attaching postscript of the queen and the cousin and beautifully bound. Currently, it was published in 2015, and currently housed in the National Hangul Museum. The queen herself selected the biography of Manseokgun and Gwakjaui among Chinese history books. Because she wanted her family to succeed by conducting modestly and carefully just like Chinese Manseokgun and Gwakjaui. Through this, we could understand that the queen could read and understand those history books in Chinese. Also, based on the fact that Kim Jongseon translated it, male intellectuals also must have freely used hangul. In the upper class of that period, female usually utilized hangul and male mainly used Chinese character. This is social and cultural phenomenon. However, both female and male belong to the upper class could read and write Chinese character as well as hangul.
